Looking to make a certain kind of sound in dubstep
Right now this is my favorite track, I want my bass to sound something like how the bass sounds at 56 seconds in:
I’m new to making dubstep, and ive been trying to read up on producing it. I did one track, but the bass in that is just a regular sine wave so it’s really smooth. A dirtier bass sound is what im after. I’ve tried messing with the simpler, sampler, and Operator in ableton and just cant seem to get it how I want it to sound. So does anyone have tips for getting my sound closer to that in the video?
Lot’s of slightly detuned saw waves.
Play about with distortion and bitcrushers.
Maybe add some other effects like chorus or phasers.
Duplicate your bass patch (midi and all) - 1st channel roll off anything below 100hz (so there’s no sub bass left in it). 2nd channel - make the bass patch a simple sine or triangle wave and roll off any frequency’s ABOVE 100hz (so all your left with is sub bass)
1st channel, filter it with lfos, distort it crush it fuk it up however you like till you find your sound.
keep the 2nd channel clean and playing the same as the 1st channel and your bass should sound sweet!
If you want to look stuff up check out the production bible on dubstepforum.com and trawl ‘the grid’ over at Dogsonacid.com for ‘resampling’
thanks man, I’ll try that. I’m new to synthesis since I really only used a lot of samples doing hiphop beats. It’s hard to wrap my head around some of the processes
another thing I want to know is how to get my wobble tight. If Im using the lfo knobs in simpler it’s fine, but after making a bass sound in operator, and trying to modulate it with an auto filter, it doesnt have the same effect/tightness as with the sampler/simpler. why is this?
