I was wondering if should I buy an Air 13’’ with i7 1.7 or MBP 13’'…
I’m worried because the lack of USBs and because there is no Firewire.
I think I will wait for some hubs to appear before jump into Air
:
Thunderbolt → 4xUSB
Thunderbolt → Firewire800
If I had to spend my own Nickel I would not hesitate going with a Air. I have a 2 year old Air here that runs Traktor really well granted you cannot slam it with a bunch of FX and stuff but for normal tasks its great. Can only imagine what the current crop is like.
Look at the size of that screen!
which one ? The 13 or 11’ ?
I wouldn’t really consider the 11’ … 13’ at a minimum resolution looks sick too
and looks like it’d put my battered 2 year old MBP to shame.
as much as i want to get the 2011 MBA - 256GB SSD is not enough to store all my music
I just upgraded my macbook pro hdd to 750GB and its still not enough - really cant imagine going to 256GB unless i really downsize my library
too bad though the 13 inch MBA looks so SEXY
as mentioned earlier the USB connectivity is the biggest problem. But the air’s are more and more looking like the perfect portable dj laptop
That’s my worry… My music collection right now is not so large, I can live with 256GB, but I’m not a professional DJ yet, I think it will rise as the time goes on and I will end up needing an external HD. It’s even worse because that I would loose half of the USBs…
It would be easier to choose if there was an adaptor, hub or something to expand the thunderbolt port to multi-protocols adapters (usb, firewire, ethernet, hdmi)
Shouldn’t it be theoretically possible to make a powered Thunderbolt USB hub with like 50 ports if you wanted? If no one’s made a TB USB hub yet (other than the new cinema display, that doesn’t count lol), I’m amazed!
Sexactly.
My only concern is the 13" screen.
I’ve been using a 13’ and before that 12.1’ as my primary computer for the past 10 years nearly for everything from DJ’ing to producing to Website Design and Graphics work … I’ve never really seen a need for anything bigger everyone is different though.
The resolution on the 13’ air looks tasty 1440 x 900 Yum!
Really hope someone brings out a reasonably priced Thunderbolt hub with FW sooner rather than later.
Yep I am only waiting on thunderbolt adapters too now. Seems nobody has started making them yet though.
LOL, I’m sure the Air sales dropped totally with the previous Air because of the lack of backlit ![]()
love the new Airs - finally want an MBA! The 256SSD would be enough for my DJing FLAC&320 collection and will probably be like this for a couple of years to come. It will, however, impact my library management workflow, as I have most my music files in parallel to the DJing collection and that has to change.
love the new Display! It really is a great docking station.
We should also expect a standalone Thunderbolt port replicators to provide the us with the features of the new screen. I wish for a device with: 8xUSB2, 2xSATAII, 2xMiniDisplayPort(there are DVI&VGA adapters), 2xFW800, 1Gbit Ethernet, 1 Thunderbolt port for daisy chaining & an integrated PSU. I’m wondering why no 3rd party company is doing these yet, but it’ll come for sure! And it has to be compact enough for traveling …
The new MBA 13" i7 with it’s price is very attractive IMO. I think I would choose it over the MBP 13 mostly due to the higher resolution, although Traktor may become less visible from distance, and that’s important.
Yeah I am all over this eventually … not sure if the difference between i5 and i7 is really a big enough deal to spend the extra cash on. As for the SSD, 250G is way more than enough. Figure about 80-100 of that for system software, office software, etc. If you have way more than 100G of music, you never need to bring that much to a DJ gig. Put together a collection just for DJing that is much smaller. Use external hard drives to transfer any crucial new files to your DJ collection and store and index your full collection on another hard drive. So you can always dig up that banger from 1992 when you need to, but you don’t have to bring it to every gig.
I currently have way too much music on my DJ computer – I’m actually looking forward to having to cut it down and organize it more carefully; a 250 G internal drive limit might be just the thing.
Failing all that, hit the ATM: 512GB SSD | Newegg.com
If you want to know how they look from the inside:
There’s no FaceTimeHD camera, but there at least an SD camera, which is probably good enough ![]()
I could not seem to find it. Does the i7 have Turbo Boost? If so it can make a pretty big difference when needed.
The air cannot host a 2.5" drive inside. The SSD they use looks like a RAM chip:
^^ ouch. I wondered about that right after I posted; I guess we’ll have to wait for Apple to offer a 512 SSD upgrade for like $1500…
can’t find the specs of the i7 yet, but the i5 is:
Intel Core i5 Processor-2557M
reading this: http://ark.intel.com/products/family/59136, all i7s have the TurboBoost, but there’s no 1.8Ghz model listed yet, so we can’t be sure …
please let me know, if you find out the exact model of the i7.
@proben: think there are 3rd party options for larger than 256 modules. It’s some new standart for SSD storage, which is becoming popular even outside of apple
