Max/MSP and Max for Live - what are they?

Yo,

I’m looking into the whole monome and more open source approach to performance in Ableton (just for funsies, I’m not techy enough to achieve anything though!) and I can’t find any conclusive answer in terms that I understand to my question:

What is Max/MSP and Max for Live? (obviously, i understand the second is an Ableton resource for the first..)

If anyone would be so kind to impart some of their wisdom on the topic, it’d be gratefully appreciated

i’m not too much into it, but really interested as well..
did you read the wiki entries? they explain the basics kinda well..

otherwise: Max for Live | Ableton

thanks, but i’m still stuck as to what it’s there to achieve, and how people use it (or more, what they use it for)

EDIT: hang on.. is it simply to create ones own instruments? VST type things?

that’s what i see in max. but it’s far more complex i guess :stuck_out_tongue:

Its also to control ableton live in ways you cant do with just simple midi mapping

bento created something alredy
Check the Pool “M4L - show of hands”:

And the EQ3 (Bento’s patch for M4L)

I’m in the same step as you matt, I’m really curious about it…

Roughly: M4L is for creating instruments and effects for Live. Easier GUI and allows everything than Max/MSP, but costs more.

Max/MSP has a free runtime, more known for making the use of Monome applications possible, also on Launchpad. I could try to create a video of this later when I my LP arrives if you’re interested. As it is, youtube and Vimeo are full of videos about Monomes. Try searching Monome, Arduinome, Nonome, MLR, mlrv, 7up…

awesome thanks! i think i’m getting to grips with the concept.. can anyone link me to a vid or written tutorial about how to program a monome? (or that type of thing..) I’m really interested in learning how this works..

These might get you started, although setting up depends a lot on what controller and which monome program you’re going to use. I would suggest heading to Monome.org:

You could make your own “patches” with a lot of powerfull features and full customizable. You have a open (more or less) community wanting to help…
