Midi Controller -v- Midi Keyboard

Sorry as I know you are probably plagued with these sort of things. I am intending to start out in music production and I’m in a bit of a pickle. I can’t quite decide if I should go for the Novation Launchpad or for an Akai MPK25.

Admittedly they both have their strengths and weaknesses. I do intend to be messing around with Synths and attempting to make my own sound, which I believe the MPK would help with, however for the ease of it and for the ability to map so seamlessly the launchpad looks rather enticing.

If however I’m talking through my ass here, feel free to correct me. As previously mentioned just getting it to it and looking for the right hardware.

Sidenote: Own an S4 and I’m getting ableton on the cheap plus a few NI VST’s.

I’m not a big Launchpad fan. I would so much rather have the keys and pads on the MPK25.

Cool, this was my initial feeling. Is there any foreseeable advantage of using one over the other?

The launchpad to me is more of a performance controller, while the MPK25 (which I have and love) is better for writing IMO.

I have trouble composing/producing without keys. I find that keys are probably the best way for me to input melodic material. 25 isn’t a lot, but is a huge improvement on just a mouse.

In a similar way, I like pads for drum input and performance. I think that having them on the same controller is really cool. However, there ought to be 16, not 12.

These are three advantages to the MPK.

I think that these are two really different products. Like Tarekith, I also think that Launchpad is more of a performance controller.

The launchpad is completely useless for production, unless you have a really specific workflow…in which case the MPK would be completely worthless……which you would know.

Frankly, i think the Launchpad is worthless in general…but that’s just me.

…not just you!
