Just need a few pointers on mixing Funk/Disco/Funky breaks type stuff (Think–D-Cup/Tahuna breaks/Jamarioquai/Kolombo/Neighbour etc)
Whilst a few of tracks i have are nice to mix with, in that they have some intro’s/Outro’s/Mid sections of plain beats (the more housey stuff), some of them can be quite busy, especially with a bass guitar and that funky ‘Wap’ Sound right at the start and throughout the tune that can make the mixes quite clunky and messy when trying to blend them.
Also don’t forget that the guys who originally had to mix these tracks in the 70s and 80s didn’t have EQ, or loops or anything at all really. So sometimes they would just fade in and fade out on a track. Listen to some of Larry levan’s or Jellybean’s mixes and you’ll notice that they will do this instead of beatmatching every single track. Sometimes you just can’t mix 2 tracks together and that’s OK. Not every mix has to be flawless to keep a party dancing
I find just listening to it non-stop (for any genre) just gets you completely in the groove with it.
Dimitri from Paris is one of those artists that just yeah,
.
A Night at the Playboy Mansion and the rest of the Playboy mansion “series” if you will was something I grew up on. Worth checking if you aren’t familiar.
