Just clean with a damp cloth, sand them gently so the paint sticks, wipe again to get what you sanded off completely. Then use whatever matte or gloss spray paint you like and follow it up with a bunch of clear coats (4 maybe). This will insure the paint doesn’t wear off the controller and get obsorbed by your skin. I painted my xsession pro this way (using a splatter technique between the white and clear coats). It’s in the mod or show ur set up somewhere. Hope that helps
Oh, take pics and post when you’re done, I don’t think anyone has posted a pic of a painted x1 yet ![]()
does the sanding also apply to the APC? since its plastic like the Launchpad and such and such, also do they sale clear coat in spray paint form as well? and im assuming white spray paint will work..
what about using primer instead of having to sand it?
Krylon fusion also works well…it bonds with the plastic.
bumpin cause im still unsure of the metal X1 and how to paint it effectively
For the best finish, you’ll need to sand it back, then paint it white. You don’t need to sand it back to the bare metal, just sand it enough to take the “shine” (and any lettering/graphics off).
But the absolute BEST way to paint metal, is to sand it back to bare metal, 1 coat of primer, and couple of coats of white on top…
Why not just go to 12inchskinz.com and buy an overlay? It will save you a ton of time and its reversible.
Because this is more fun.
So for the plastic I can imagine I probably don’t need to sand til the letters and graphics come off eh? Since they’re like treated into the plastic
For the plastic, I recommend the Krylon Fusion. It is made for plastic and sticks very well if the surface is prepped properly.
Sand, clean, paint with very light coats until you have the finish you want.
Too many people lay it on thick and get drips and have to start over…
i was told to wash before sanding which i did, but i got a few finger prints of the sanded surface (hard not to with all the small squares needing sanding) so can i wash it again after sanding? if so with what?
You want something that takes off the oil from your fingers. Alcohol wipes are what we use in the automotive industry.
ok cool alcohol wipes it is, would alcohol on a cloth do just as fine? and im guessing alcolol is chosen because it evaporates safely from the plastic and/or metal…
Yes, Isopropyl alcohol mixed with a little water should be just fine. Yep, it evaporates very quickly, I would wear rubber gloves during this step and for the remainder of the project.
thank you so much for the help ![]()
