Trying to decide which to get. I looked at the RK8 and it sounded great, but it is way too big for a dorm room. I’m just going to use these speakers as a bedroom DJ with my S4. I am learning the ropes right now. I am mainly interested in electro but I really enjoy dubstep as well.
I’ve heard mixed reviews on each. I wont be blasting music with these. Im leaning towards the Yamaha HS50M because they have a “clean and flat” sound, and dealing with electro I probably really want hear the mid’s/high’s
had the same decision last week and went for the RP6, as the bass was a lot better, like people are saying the yamaha’s have a more detailed sound but the punch from the RP6 was to nice not to go for, plus they’d be better for a small house party if you needed them for that
Go to the store and listen to the monitors in your pricerange! There really is no other way to figure out if you’re buying the right speakers. I personally didn’t like the mid/high range on the KRKs and went with HS80Ms, for example.
1 of my RK5’s ‘died’ after not even a month’s (lightwieight) use. Still under warranty but exchanged for RK6’s with (a guaranteed) 10hrs use for the same price. I loved the 5’s, but the 6’s are wicked. Much fuller sound-stage, chunky lows and not as bright in the mids. Got over being pissed-off very quickly.
To anyone who has the same question and stumbles on this some time in the future: Don’t buy that kind of yamaha monitor for DJing alone. They’re designed exclusively for music production, which means that they are extremely revealing, and in some ways you might say that your tunes will sound the worst they possibly can on such monitors.
Those Yamahas follow in the tradition of the NS10M, a legendary studio monitor across the world. It was said of the NS10M that if your mix sounds ok on them, then it’ll sound great on pretty much anything else. In DJing, you don’t want your monitors to be your harshest critics.
I picked up some rp5s a few months ago purely for space saving reasons when I go back to uni (my main monitors are far too big and heavy to fit into my room there). They’re fantastic for the size (and price).
Just go to the store when you’ve got the cash and have a good listen. I didn’t like the yamaha’s too much and had my mind set on the RP6, but in the end I choose the RP8’s because the sound was way more accurate on the bottom end.
Sound advice (OK - bad pun). Did side-by-side comparison of KRK’s and Yamaha’s - they are RELENTLESS. Personally I couldn’t see myself using them for an extended time.
Loved th 5’s - only swopped them out for the 6’s as the offer was on the table. Size-wise the 5’s were perfect. My wife’s comment - “Why are they SO big?”
