Need Help with Studio Monitors

Hey DJTT, so i have no studio monitors and i wanted to know whats the best alternative to use for reference when you have no pair of monitors. I have HD25’s witch in some cases maybe called reference headphones but for doing a whole project with just headphones doesn’t cut it. I would like your opinion, thanks. (Just to add on, in about a week im going to place panels in my room to control sound from shelf speakers i currently use to mix on)

JBL LSR 305’s are great and priced right, but they’re rear ported, so you need some space from the wall.

You could probably use your headphones to do the mixdown, just use a similar reference track to A-B your mix. Also, check your mix on as many things as you can (i.e. car stereo, other headphones, other speakers) and if it sounds good on everything you should be good.

I mix on a pair of Sennheiser cans and they can be really good at detail work like fine tuning eqs and reverb but it’s really hard to get a sense of balance in a mix, especially the low end without hearing it on monitors. I would say a decent pair of monitors is essential to production past a certain point. I remember working on home stereo speakers for years and finally getting proper monitors, it was one of those “ah ha” moments where I realized why my mixes never translated well. Bottom line - if you are serious about this and you can at all afford it, get a pair!

How much do you want to spend?

That’s not going to be much of a step up from normal shelf speakers to be honest. Maybe you could find some used Alesis M1 actives for around that.

0-$200

Weird, no idea how my reply ended up above your’s.

Yes i know. I’m currently a senior in high school with no job so for the moment that my budget for now but anyway i really like the Alesis M1

but honestly what would be the best option. save up for some Yamaha’s hs5 or start with a budget pair of speakers

I’ve heard several monitors before and yamaha hs series was the one that really popped out to me

these are good! I’ve heard them before.
