hello everyone, im at that point in djing where i face alot of criticism because im not very popular and also because people dont want to waste their time looking at a dj who isnt known by others outside if his “circle”. What should i do at this point? Do you guys have any advice on how to get my name out there?
-Thank you all for your time
im unpopular because people judge me based on my fb page likes n listens on mixcloud, i’ve been djing for about a year now and ive been using fb, mixcloud and a little bit of youtube to distribute my mixes
well, i’ve tried not giving a damn about what people think but thats sorta making it worse, cause after all, their the ones that say weather im “good” or “bad” right?
as long as YOU like what you are doing , eventually you will attract people that do too… if you get all caught up in being attractive youll end up turning everyone off… this is a universal truth.
that said , try booking your own gigs, if its a small venue rock it yourself, if you can secure a decent location, ask a local bigger name to headline it for you, people love having their ego massaged.
When I started (granted I didnt start playing out until about 2yrs in), I was honestly playing shitty raves having a blast for $0, just having a great time and people caught on to my style and eventually asked to book me. Then I took that experience to locking down my own night at a bar so Im not just another DJing rolling through there, now people have a face and a name to go with me.
Also, since youve been on in it for a year, learn as much as you can, playing out and getting booked will come naturally. Learning the basics of the art of DJing will get you much further than trying to get as many bookings as possible.
I’m 39 years old. I have been playing eletronic music for 15 years and DJ-ing for 20. I still have to answer questions about the music I choose to love and listen to.
It’s okay for a DJ to be shy. But a DJ can’t be self conscious.
man i started a night with no money invested at all and we made enough money to get a nice logo and flyer done up for the next part, where we made 6x what we did on the first one. great to get your name out there and on flyers, also you can set up a blog or a website for next to no money and start trying to get a following like that, and have your brand name out there! also, booking local bigger names allows them to see what you can do, because basically every bigger dj in your area will run their own club nights. it’s literally the secret to locally making it.
