New dj with questions

I am new to the dj scene. I always loved djing and decided to make a serious effort into learning the art. I find myself running into a problem. How do I go about getting a good collection of music? I’m in my 30’s so there is a lot of old school stuff hip-hop and house i would love to have also stuff I won’t remember until I hear it. Any sites that is recommended or should I look to buy a HD from a dj selling their music?

http://www.discogs.com/

Ebay! I have bought loads of good old music in vinyl and CD format.

You need to have a rough idea what you’re searching for. Or perhaps just “old school house” might bring up some stuff.

And Amazon, has used things for sale. Try them too for old CDs etc.

Regards

I get all my music from Youtube channels, like TrapCity for Trap, Spinning Records for EH, UKF for Dubstep, and most of the time I listen on Pandora so whenever I hear a song I could work with, I save it on my notepad.

Tell me you only use youtube for inspiration and you don’t actually use youtube rips when you DJ?

http://www.classichousetracks.com/ - good old skool house blog
100 Greatest House Dance Songs - great list of old tracks

btw buying a HD filled with music is pretty much illegal. just saying.

…oops…agreed on this one.

The best way to discover old music is to youtube tunes you remember and listen to the recommendations. Also, wikpediing (?) different labels (start with Strictly Rhythm for house) can be quite helpful.

What kind of hip hop are you into?

You mean there is another option?

Classic House: Get Classic House Tracks on Traxsource - great resource to purchase some older tracks.

How is listening to music on Youtube bad, and learning about new artists/songs from Youtube?

I use Soundcloud/Mixcloud too.

He meant ripping the music from there.

It would be SHYTE quality…

No problem using it for inspiration etc.

Oh no, not at all. I use Beatport, Soundcloud, and just other websites I stumble across where there would be free download that’s fitting quality.

Yeah, as a true DJ you should really buy your own tracks.. Unless artists have free promo downloads of songs they never release.. Then it’s a different story. You want everything to be as legit as possible so you don’t run into copyright issues with Soundcloud, etc.

As long as there is a legal way to obtain a track, you can get away with getting it illegally. It’s just common courtesy not to do it.

iTunes got some really good old skool compilations of most genres… good way to get your collection up to speed quickly

But agreed youtube / blogs / searching for top 100s blogs etc

Where there’s a will there’s a way

All DJs have to dig for music in one way or another. Try joining a record pool with some DJs who have a similar sound to what you are looking for.

x2 on this one

Discogs is boss

Find a good used music store in your area. Go in, tell them what you kind of music you like, ask for suggestions.
