Well, I sold my MacBook Pro yesterday (made profit on it too!) in hopes of there being a refresh soon, and as of this morning, they were released on the Apple store.
The 13" remain almost the same, with bumps in speed, the GPU swapped out, increased battery life, etc.
The 15" get the “holy shit” package.
My main gripe: WHERE IS THE USB 3.0!!!
Anyhow, read within for more info. For anyone in the market for a MacBookPro, hopefully this will help with your buying considerations
Mac machines are all very solid. Windoze machines crash and have so many issues. I will gladly sacrifice usb3 for a machine that I can count on 100% of the time…
I have no problem spending that type of money on something which I find useful, and has the exact features which I need. USB 3.0 is a huge deal for me, its more than a feature, its future proofing. Look at how much we rely on USB 2.0 for all of our stuff, imagine what will come with 3.0
For the digital DJ, USB is the bread and butter
Overall though, I was really hoping they would give the 13" a CPU upgrade entirely. Still a welcome refresh though.
The GPU which automatically switches on and off is nice.
The biggest disappointment always remains to be only 2 usb ports. The only possible reason I could see for not including it is power consumption. Even space isn’t a very reasonable explanation since after getting rid of a full DVI port that basically opens up space for another one.
So it looks like if someone is in the market for a new Mac laptop, the 15" version seems the way to go.
Pricey, but looks pretty solid. I can’t afford one at the moment, but it’s nice seeing what is going on for the future.
I agree that future proofing is great, but it’s also a matter that not a ton of things really use USB 2.0, nevermind 3.0 which I imagine will take a couple years to really catch on. So we’ll see how that goes.
i Have one of the early unibody’s with the expresscard port and have no issues with it though i only use it to dj, and am wonderinf if going to the i macbook pro will be worth the upgrade as it doesn’t have an expresscard port which i use for a usb card…I’m pretty close to rodering one this week..but i rally want to know if its worth the upgrade.
where did you sell your macbook? my screen is facked up from fabric softener, but the whole thing is pretty new (four months usage only). so i need a new one :*( should i sell mine for parts or …???
No way, the only reason is because the cheeky bastards know they can sell these new machines, make fat profit, and then in another 10 minutes update the machines with USB 3 ports and make even more money from the suckers who bought the older machines.
Don’t get me wrong, I love apple products but they are definitely out to make as much bank as possible. They never used to be so bad, they’d release a product and it would stick around for quite a while as their flagship model. I think it was around the time of the introduction of the G5 tower, that’s when shit started spiralling out of control. Every other day there’d be a newer, faster, more powerful model.
true story, computer market behaves like this since dawn of time. Why not implementing USB 3.0 or anything else? cuz nobody, and i mean NOBODY can say it’s going to be the standart in future - in every field you have many competing technologies and each one of them has it’s fair succes rate… history is repeating, you cannot deny that.
anyway, would someone explain me why would i need USB 3.0 in the future ?(what’s the difference… i assume it’s just speed again)? where is the benefit? (concerning midi controlers and soundcards)… actually i have the feeling that USB 2.0 does not limit us in any way, or put it like this, do we really max out the potential os USB 2.0 with our current equipment? i doubt that…
on topic of getting crazy new shit: i get new laptop whenever i need it (ie former machine breaksdownm gets stolen or new software is too demanding), not the other way around.
i’m not sure but personally when i saw the prices of the refreshed units I thought overpriced for sure.
I wonder for the average user here how much a difference the extra power of the refreshed ones is compared to say a $800 refurbed macbook.
like karlos has said before, once you reach a certain performance threshold adding more doesn’t really mean you get a better machine for the job, (perhaps you gain some future-proofing)
i also will be the stick in the sand that says buying an apple computer doesn’t guarantee you won’t have issues. i mean isn’t the fact that everyone loves and uses apple care show that there are at least hardware issues to deal with?
Yeah future proofing is all you get and even that has its limits.
I have no need to future proof for Traktor cus i know that my Macs are gonna be able to handle Traktor for the foreseeable future…
Dont get me wrong if i had the money laying around id buy one but there is no need for anyone with a MBP above 2ghz to be thinking “shit i gotta get one of these cus im so far behind”.
Get one when your ready theres no rush, certainly not for one of this line.
The processors are nice but not especially for your djing needs at the moment.
I guess ill overlook this line cus my newer MBP is only 8 months old. Maybe next year ill have look to see whats out.
Exactly. Well, faster is always better, I mean I can’t wait til they release machines so fast it does what I want it to do before I even tell it to do it.
But yeah man, my MB is fine for me right now and most likely for a good while yet. Hell, my powerbook 1.67 was plenty quick enough before it got stolen. I don’t let all these new models bother me.
