Hey everybody, Recently I got asked to have a residency at a club in my local area on Friday nights. It previously had another owner and now under new management changes are going to take place. Friday nights are very competitive in my area as the area it is located has the most bars/clubs per square foot of any street in North America, mind you the street is not very long and some of the bars are old pubs which would not neccesarily consider as direct competition.
I spin mostly Electro-Pop, Hip-Hop, Electro, Top 40 stuff. It is a slightly below medium sized two story club with lots of cool lighting that sets it apart from other bars.
Basically I am looking for some fresh new ideas to get people in the club. Promotional tactics, a catchy name for the Friday residency etc, just some things to set it apart.
After the embarrasing jersey shore “fist pumping” contests usually get people in for either bragging right or to have a look at morons , either that or a party rock “shufflin” contest… These are regular things at pups i play in… … If worst comes to worse pack your music collect with some amazing songs… Will beat a dj with creative ideas any day
plus any time we did a fancy dress night in the past you dont have people floating in and out , once its fancy dress and no other clubs have the same idea that night people kind of have to stay… prizes for best dressed and that shizzle… then again people may feel trapped and not turn up wearing fancy dress… could go either way I guess

what time your club closes? do a no cover for girls until 10pm
Costume parties get a huge crowd of hot girls in my area. you can do a blackout party. no lights all neon and blaklights. the theme could be anything for the blackout, “nurse costumes” for girls, “docs” for the guys, or the girls could have a “cat” theme.
best dress girl gets VIP for her and two people for an hour.
talk to the bar and see what deal they get on liquor. maybe $1 tequila shots (tequila is usually the cheapest)

Not so much a good idea, as “good music” is objective. As well as music itself usually won’t bring in the crowd as most venues play Top40. You do need something unique to drag people in the front door. After that good music, cheap liquor, and hot girls will keep the crowd there.
If you want a shit club night with cheap drink offers and spin top 40
then its easy to do,with out any effort and you make easy money.
All the greats that started there own club nights,did not conform to what people wanted them to play,they just went with it.
you can go to 20 clubs in one night all playing the same top 40 shit and not remember anything,but you find that one good club night playing something different and making the club its own and not giving a fuck about the money and tacky promotions,that is a club night you will always remember,tell your friends about and revisit.
You do understand that if a club does not make enough money they cannot continue to run the club, right? The fact of the matter is no matter how much you love something or have the “will” to make something work you still need to be able to monetarily afford it and have a certain amount of cash flow to run the place.
Not to mention that if you are just promoting or running one night and it’s not lucrative enough for the club owner (especially if he’s used to seeing certain dividends) then he will replace your ass with someone who can make him more money.
playing good music is obvious.
but money is what pays people and with promo ideas to attract new customers that have a predisposition-ed idea about a club will cause them to go try the club under a new mind set.
I’m new here and want everyone to know I’m not being rude, but having special nights promoting a pool party or foam party, or blackout party creates a hype and you might have 200-300 new people try out this club and 150 people might now come back on a regular basis BC they…-LOVED the MUSIC, Enjoyed the atmosphere, Was excited about the special night, and really appreciated having a low cover charge and drink specials.
This guy is a fellow dj that got a job being a resident DJ, that’s awesome. We need to help him make sure nights he plays he has his regulars but also a lot of new people coming because of good music fun environment and a place where they didn’t spend $100 on just themselves to party.
We are all after the same goal. Produce/mix amazing music for people to have an amazing time. This is a step towards that.

of course you have to make money,money is good,and money makes the world go around
what i am trying to say is you can make money by being different you just have to put more work in,anyone can put on a club night,still lady gaga on,and hand out free shot cards,it just takes alot more time and patience to make something that people will remember.

And to others about the Top 40 comments. I play music I like, and I do like some top 40 music nowadays. Alot of it has an electro hip-hop vibe that I dig (others may not). I find that alot of the “mainstream music” recently is becoming more interesting while alot of the Electro beats I listened to for years are just seeming more and more monotonous and lacking variety. Thats just my opinion I wouldn’t call myself a top 40 DJ in any sence and I do think the night will differ from just your regular top 40 club.
But ya a costume party or a theme party might be a good idea. I read on another thread… 5 ladies come together and get a free bottle of champaigne…that may atract a shit load of girls and fellas alike.
