Newbie to House

Hey guys,

Regular follower of the blog, teach myself something new everyday or brush up on skills, but with a background in Hip Hop / Pop and other popular American music, I’m really making a push to expand my knowledge in House / Electronic, and just about any other genre…

Anyone have good suggestions for blogs / sources of info that I can follow to keep up with new music as it emerges?

bit of a niche sound but its doing it in the uk :sunglasses:

I suggest you study the old a little at the beginning. Hard to know where things are going if you don’t know where they have been.

Have a look in the forum for a thread on “if you could only play one track”, lots of gems in there.

Look up house and techno history (wikipedia), lots of early details.

Just some suggestions, Phil.

Thanks for the info guys, appreciate it! Took the words out of my mouth Phil, I did some generic studying on song structures of typical House-style music to get a better acquainted with it…Always a good idea to learn your history…

Kaskade & Deadmau5:

I always suggest browsing beatport.com. Probably the best way you can get a sense of the different genres thus helping one distinguish between electro, house, techno ect…

Do you mean http://thedjblog.com/ ?

Not sure about Robot Dance music any more. There’s a DJ Pauly D add on the front page.

well i came from a hip-hop background and my knowledge of EDM was its either house or electro. The popular names everyone knows like David Guetta. I started by listening to some folks and figuring out who I like. We’ll take Axwell for example. Sweedish House Mafia has a forum and most of the folks there jam to artist with a similar vibe/sound so I started looking at what sets Axwell had played and then looked up those artists. Then I looked up songs that went well with those artist and before you know it - I ended up finding a bunch of artists with a similar sound to what I like. And along the way I also ended up listening to a few tracks of folks I didn’t like and now I generally avoid them.

You can do something similar on beatport. Check out whats hot, then check out the artist, then check out what other songs they have, any remixes they’ve done, orignials to those remixes, etc.

this is (acid) house:

Once you can listen to this:

and feel it, you’ll know House.

Took me many years of ignoring it, discounting it and skipping past it, but now I understand why this weak sounding, amateurish, under-produced track is a true, heartbreaking masterpiece.

Just listen to LOTS of music mate, you’ll soon catch onto what genre is “apparently” what, all the good labels to follow etc. Maybe stick to 2-3 labels for a start and branch out from there.
