It’s been a long time since I’ve had a residency but most of the ones I’ve had required me to lug gear and set it all up (and of course break it all down and take it home). 2 turntables, mixer, cables, headphones and crap, and depending on the gig anywhere from 75-300 vinyl records. I started out with a coffin for the turntables and mixer but quickly learned that these are impractical if you’re not well-known enough to have someone help carry your gear… Found some bright yellow flight cases for the turntables and a CDJ-1000 box for the mixer, headphones, and cables; have several bags for the vinyl.
I’m playing this weekend in Joshua Tree and will be lugging roughly the same amount of stuff though fewer vinyls … not because I need to – it’ll be a crowd of maybe 30 or so friends – but because I want to be able to play a few actual records and even scratch (poorly) rather than just pushing buttons. So I’ll be bringing turntables and gear as well as speakers and stuff and a few midi controllers (probably just midi fighter and dicer and X1 but I might bring the VCI as well). So if anything, I’m lugging more gear with Traktor, not less!
For several years, lugging gear was the only exercise I got
25 kg is not the whole set up, just your records. 25 kg is 55 lbs, which roughly translates to about 100 records. So would you carry 100 records to a club that had a house setup?
i used to have an ns7 and that thing in the flight case was like 80 pounds. you wouldnt think it would be too bad because it is on coaster wheels though. but unfortuntely (fortunately :s) i am 6 foot 7 and i am too tall to roll it in its case properly. i have to bend my back and quarter turn awkwardly. i tell ya, that was not fun bringing on a plane down to mexico. im stoked for my midi fighter, s4, headphones, cables, mic, laptop and maybe even my chaos pad all to fit in a regular (large) suitcase with ample room for foam
