Painfully unquantized track

Painfully unquantized track

I’ve been wanting to remix this song that is primarily piano only. Only problem is, as far as I can tell, it was played without a metronome (I suppose this left the player plenty of room to add emotion to the song).

At first I thought maybe it was just in a different time signature, which often times trips me up, so I looked up the sheet music online. Nope. It’s in 4/4, for the tempo it says “78bpm Freely.” Which to me means “try to play this at around 78bpm, but don’t worry too much about it.”

So uhh… what do I do? I thought about tediously chopping it up into smaller parts and then stretching the samples to fit, but I would probably be at the age to retire before I was able to get it done.

Any ideas? Or should I just throw in the towel and move on to something else?

Are you planning on using the whole performance or just a bar or two from it? How bad does it drift? Nothing wrong with having a bit of that human element to give it some swing and groove

On that note, you can just stretch the segment you want to use to that it starts on the right beat and ends on the last beat, but still have the center part groove and swing naturally still

I am planning on using the whole thing, or at least most of it. The thought did occur to me that maybe having some of the notes not being directly on beat would add a “human element” to an otherwise electronic, computerized track. However, it’s not like the bar begins, the first note begins on time, the rest stray, and then at the next bar they’re right where they should be. It’s sorta all over the place.

That’s a good idea actually. Still a bit tedious, but worth a shot.

Thanks bro.

Just uut of curiosity, what is the song and what are you planning to use it for?

A few weeks ago, a blogger came across the remix I did of Lux Aeterna (here). I finished that remix nearly a year ago, and it isn’t nearly up to par with my work now, but for some unbelievable reason, the track got over 100 loves on hype machine (which, for me, is quite an accomplishment).

So it was suggested to me that I try to remix this song, sort of along the same lines as my Lux Aeterna remix: really, really chill dubstep. I think I could turn out something great, but the little technical details are driving me nuts.

I’d do it in ableton. Imo it has the best soundengine for stretching audio.

fredddy beat me to it, if you’ve got Logic 9 for any reason, you can use Flex Time to do it in there as well. sounds just as good as warping in ableton
