Needles?
Or Needles and Carts?
Or Needles andCarts and Headshells?
TBH mate - I think for that price range, you’ll be better of buying a pair of Stantol 500 AL’s. Even the VERY OLD ONES (Gold Carts) are great.
I have Old AL’s (Gold/White) and new AL’s (Black/Blue) and they’re both great for scratching. I even have a pair of Technics Headsheel mounted M44-7’s that I’ve never used because the Stantons work so well…
Funny story, i just bought those right before your comment post. I have the dj craze edition 520sk cartridge that came with a pair of used stanton str 80 turntable. Im making a dvs setup and the first thing that i notice was the amount of skip. the used needles would jump on me on a simple baby scratch and damage my record vinyls.
It’s not the needles fault.
Check the set-up of your tonearm.
The str80 being a budget turntable only has counter weight and thats about it. I set the counter at the medium spot for the needle which is 3 grams, but havent had any luck witch more or less weight
Have you tried changing the position and/or the angle that the cart is mounted to the headshell?
yes i tried everything but it gives me the same results anyhow.
this how i currently have it set up.Looks to me like you’ve got it at a bit of an odd angle, and too far forward. I think whoever set up that cart has tried to emulate an “S” type tonearm by mounting the cart at a slight angle facing inwards.
Strange - because some people with “S” type tonearms do the exact OPPOSITE To emulate a straight tonearm!
Set the cart at a distance where the needle is aligned with the front edge of the headshell. You can add a little weight using the counter-balance. Too much weight will be obvious when you try lifting the tonearm with your hand…
I had that set up for about months but i didnt add any extra weight, ill re-configure it and add 2 more grams and see how that goes
Also - check that the turntable feet are all screwed into the body as tight as they’ll go.
ok i just got done trying it. skipping was cut down. i got a good circle in my the traktor scope and was able to do chirps at a fairly decent tempo. i think the combo of cartridge and the extra 2 grams(i had it at two and now its at four) helped a lot
Sounds good. From your last pic, I’d move the carts forwards a little, so that the actual NEEDLE POINT is in line with the front of the headshell.
I reckon you’ll be set if you do that.
How is your coffin/flight cases set up? Are they on a table top, or on an “X” type stand? There might be something you can do there, too.
Alright will do, i know exactly what you mean!
I have the case on a regular ikia table and no hight was adjusted for sturdiness.
Nice looking set-up, mate! ![]()
If there isn’t already, I’d attach some nice sturdy rubber feet to each corner of the coffin. You can get some “wobble” if the coffin is resting on the metal corner protectors…
So today i got my new needles in the mail for my current cartridge, and man what a difference! Those needles i had were all worn out! I slapped the new needles in re-calibrated the weight and bam, not a single skip on 6grams. Im a happy chap now. Time to practice some scratches.
Victory is yours. ![]()
