PC RAM upgrade

Hello.

I recently upgrade to Windows 8 getting along with it okay, just wondering if a RAM upgrade is needed?

Current specs are as follows: Windows 8 Pro 64-bit, Intel Core2 CPU 4300 @ 1.80GHz, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT.

Using Ableton and haven’t experienced any problems as yet but I’m not using any VSTs or anything yet.

If I was to upgrade, it would be to this: http://www.ebuyer.com/190905-crucial-4gb-2x2gb-ddr2-1066mhz-memory-kit-cl7-1-8v-unbuffered-non-ecc-ct2kit25664aa1067

Thanks.

Yes

4GB RAM is absolutely essential for any type of system in my opinion. I take it you know what you’re doing if you’re to see if your motherboard can take this RAM and also to install it, right?

Also, 1.8GHz is not enough for dual core in MY opinion.

Most definitely. 4 year old laptops won’t even have that any more.

If anything you’ll need to upgrade your entire computer.

Yeah, I know enough to get by. I actually put this PC together myself so upgrading isn’t too much hassle.

What CPU would you recommend?

Intel i3, i5, i7 if you’ve got a strict budget then go for AMD Athlon, FX Series etc. Also you need to change the motherboard  I can
recommend some if you like; which also may lead changing your RAM.

The i3 is looking like it could certainly fit my budget, this one in particular: http://www.ebuyer.com/447252-core-i3-3210-3-20ghz-3m-lga-1155-box-bx80637i33210

If you could recommend a mobo that would be good, I’m okay putting the things together physically but actually matching them so they’re compatible is another thing.

Yep looks good mate, cheap on Ebuyer too. Might as well get this a whole .10GHz more and for some reason cheaper http://www.ebuyer.com/393554-intel-core-i3-3220-3-10ghz-skt1155-3mb-cache-boxed-bx80637i33220?utm_source=google&utm_medium=products&gclid=CICC_unp97kCFVIPtAod1HoAYQ. Not sure what budget you are on the mobo but I’ll just throw some out there.. Also is your case ATX or mATX?

This is the case that I have:

These are good motherboards, your case will fit these:

Cool, thanks for your help!

So will the RAM I originally posted still work with all of those motherboards?

No. You will need DDR3 RAM, which is cheaper! Go for Corsair really good and cheap RAM

I’m glad I was of some help. If you have any questions, feel free to ask

Just FYI - if you decide to update your rig read up on the issues people have with AMD processors and Audio software first

I’d stick with intel.

Maybe a Haswell processor? That way you aren’t buying an outdated motherboard too, and you’ll get a little more processing power out of it vs Ivy Bridge.

Intel > AMD any day of the week any day, and also I didn’t know that. Thanks

If I was to get that one, would the motherboards that Daily Crisis has listed still be okay?

If you need to replace your motherboard, processor and memory, you’d probably be better off going with one of the bundle deals offered by various companies - this way all the components are already matched and in some cases, pre-assembled (like at overclockers.co.uk)

Can work out cheaper bang-for-buck too.

Yes. Only sometimes though.

And Dean, no they won’t. it’s a different socket. The mother boards I listed are Socket 1155 motherboards, and for this processor you need an 1150 Socket.
