Picked up a set up techs mk2. Now looking to do some work…But what do I do!

So I’'ve mostly been a CDJ kinda guy, but have been aching to add a set of techs to my setup for some time. I’ve been hunting on CL for sometime. Saw a pair go up that were in need of work and jumped on them.

I haven’t owned techs before. I’ve mostly again been CDJ, literally since the 100s and 200s. So I’m fine with those. I’ve played with techs, but never did any kinda refinishing. Now that I have a real job to buy all the toys I want I wanted to finally get a set of techs.

So overall from what I can tell both tables seem operational. Pitch appears to be working fine, and dots move steady. One of the pitchs seems a little gunked up, its not moving to smoothly past about 3, resistance is there, I sprayed fader lube in but hasn’t really resolved it. Pop lights are out on both, and overall appearance there are scuffs and scratches throughout, nothing major, but visually not as nice as could be. Also both TT are missing the feet, other then one has one foot. I’m sure this is an easy purchase on ebay. Also no dust covers or 45s. Again all easy bought if I wanted.

So I turn to DJTT to help me through a build thread of sorts for a first time refinisher/modder.

What I want to do. Take off tops and sand, prime, and paint gloss white.

Clean up all the gunk in tone, pop lights, buttons etc.

Replace lights with led, internally ground, and replace RCAs with high quality wires.

I’m estimating probably about 200-300 in repair cost. Does that sound right? Leds, new feet, paint, possibly new pitch controls, new pitch stickers, and new decals.

So if yall can recommend good comprehensive guides I would be much obliged. I will hopefully document the process as I go along. It won’t be fast but it I want to do it right.

DJ Henray dj customs can revive those techs and give you options on modding them.

SPAM !
The guy want to do it himself ? READ the freak’n OP goddamned

Chill your boots young man.

Hmmm maybe I will look into that. Although I may give my hand at reviving them first. I’ll see what his prices are, but after looking at his prices I can already tell it will cost me like 600-700 for him to do all the work I need. I would rather pay a third less and do the work myself.

Don’t bother painting them. Pull the tables down to the plinth’s and sand them back with 400 grit wet and dry then 800 wet and dry. When done head down to your local powder coater and have them coated. It cost me $60 to have both done. The finish is brilliant and it will not chip easily and is UV and solvent proof. It should last a very long time. Change both pitch faders over for new items (cheap) and also check your tone arms. Youtube will be able to help you with checking your tone arms, pitch faders, calibration and just about anything else you need to do. Have fun

hmmm. I’ve seen people do automotive paint, like acrylic enamel. But yeah I would love to go powder coat. I can probably give them to a buddy of mine, he will probably do it for free in his over since he does car parts lol.

Automotive paint is good too. A 2 Pak finish is very similar to powder coating only the application is different. Acrylic enamel is not the best option. It chips easy and will fade over time. If ya mate can do it for ya then you already have a win win situation.

Yah, I’ll buy him a pack of brew for his troubles. Shouldn’t be an issue.

Ooops sorry didn’t mean to plug someone. only meant to give you want can be done and what someone would charge so you can compare ah DIY revivival vs having someone who normally does it. GL man. I know I love my 1200’s. Also bought them used. No mods as of yet though. =)

Wheres xone when you need him,
Wonder if he would do you a discount on some work

But if you do do them yourself put up a build log, im not bothered about spraying mine because theyre in good nick cosmetically but id love to change out the RCA’s, clean out all the gunk and internally ground them

Yeah I’m looking to change the RCAs, maybe with some thick high qual ones. I’m giving the no solder LED kit a go to see if that works out for me. Then probably just doing automotive paint for the tops.

For the next set I do I’m just going to take them to get painted at a shop. for the cost of paint and supplies and all the time it takes it is probably worth it if you can find someone to do it for a fair price. I need to look around.

You will find to do any work on 1200s takes a lot longer than you expect and painting/sanding is kind of a pain so I would rather just have someone bead blast and paint or powder coat them.

I’ll be installing an LED kit and doing usual work cleaning one up in front of the TV and hours will seem to pass by before I know it. It’s a lot more of a hassle than people realize even when you’ve done it a ton of times. So many screws.

So many screwsssss… But I have it painted, internally grounded, tone arm fully disassembled, cleaned, and put back together. I am debating on whether to take the tops to a powder coater. I did a fine job on it, but like Xone said its just easier to have someone else do it better, with better material.

Next to LED mod it then reassemble. God I hope it goes back together lol.

For future reference you don’t need to take the metal shell off the transformer.

Also what happened to the feet, were they like that?

Also be sure the magnet stays protected and gets cleaned before you put the platter back on.

Yeah I figured that out after I took it apart. The feet unfortunately came that way so I had to order a new set. I put it back together to test my skills and all is well. I’m gonna dive in again once I get the LEDs.

Very cool.

Really nice work man. So pretty

Care to share some before pics so we can see the transition?
