Pioneer sp1 on traktor. “Chopping” samples

I’ve been searching and searching no one really talks about it or uses the pioneer sp1 with traktor apparently. I want the ability to slice or “chop” samples up with velocity sensitive pads in traktor like people do with the maschine that I can’t afford. I have a traktor s4 and as far as I can tell the djtt custom mk1 mapping doesn’t allow you to do this the way someone could on a maschine or obviously maybe the sp1 so am I correct in thinking all of my performance pad needs are taken care of with the sp1 or as much as they could be? Again the most appealing part to me is being able to “chop” up samples. Thank you in advance for the help! Greatly appreciated!

Do you mean “chop” as in, editing a sample into multiple segments and assigning them each to their own pad? Like an MPC/Maschine, production kind of thing? This isn’t something Traktor is really capable of. Or, am I misinterpreting your question? Include some more information about what exactly you’re trying to accomplish, maybe link a video to one of these Maschine people you’ve seen doing something similar..

No you hit the nail on the head. I think a better question would of been what specifically are you guys doing with your sp1 that you couldn’t do already?

The Freeze Mode in Traktor is kinda same thing? You can slice a track in different counts and then play, trigger and loop those peaces of audio.

Well, honestly I should of started this thread differently. You guy’s know what your talking about and have a ton of experience already of course and I respect that and appreciate that enough to say forgive the ignorance of the noobie so that’s probably the first order of business.

But the inspiration for the thread was pretty simple which is the comparison in terms of use with traktor of course and nothing else… of the pioneer SP1 versus the Traktor Kontrol F1.

When researching this you just don’t get specifics on using the pioneer SP1 with Traktor. I know a couple of members on here do and they both love it but it begs the question… why isn’t this a thing? Over the F1.

So I guess I assumed someone would post a response along the lines of “its not worth the headache of mapping etc etc” or “yea its awesome, I’m able to do everything you could do on an F1 but more on the SP1. Stems and Melody with the velocity pads.. the whole 9 yards” sort of thing.

I would love to see information on these products compared and the pros and cons because certainly from the outside it would appear that the SP1 edges out the F1. But I’m new to the industry as a whole so I’m still learning maybe some of the more basic product potential knowledge.

Hopefully there’s more information than I am aware of and my searching just wasn’t as good as I thought it was and someone has links? Or maybe even just shed some light on why most people just buy the F1 without even considering the SP1 besides native support of course or is native support enough of a road block? I don’t know.

[/quote]I picked up the SP1 to use as a generic multipurpose controller.. Hotcues, browse/load, transport, effects, loops, freeze, etc. The performance pads feel awesome and it has a lot of mapping options.

Nice. So let me ask you this, which would you recommend… the sp1 or the f1? I assume the sp1 handles stems at least as good as the f1? or is that intentionally gated by NI or how does that work?

I would think there would be a sticky thread about using the sp1 with traktor alone? Seems to be the perfect add on for tons of different set ups assuming the software/mapping is there obviously and people have map these things to perfection.

It really depends on what you want to achieve. The SP1 and F1 are essentially different tools for different jobs. Sure, one can do most of what the other can do and vice versa but, they can’t both do all the same things equally well.

The F1 was designed to offer full control over a remix deck, with the implementation of .stem control being, more or less, an afterthought. Not to say that the F1 doesn’t offer the ability to do other things quite well but, its inception was based on creating and playing 64-cell remix sets. For many people, it makes for a really great dedicated effects controller, pairing well with pretty much any other controller setup and/or DVS. And although I haven’t tried it yet, the F1 seems to work quite well for .stem control also. Personally, I would not recommend the F1 for something like finger drumming (or that type of rhythmic performance - whether it’s drum samples, synth sounds, chopped up vocals, or hotcues). The pads feel more like clicky on/off buttons than performance pads (the feel you have on Maschine, MPC, Trigger Finger, etc).

The SP1, on the other hand, has great feeling pads; I actually prefer them over Maschine’s. The SP1 was essentially designed as an auxiliary controller for DVS in Serato. It’s basically Serato’s Kontrol X1; It covers typical deck functions like, browse/load, effects, loops, hotcues, etc. It’s an excellent controller in Traktor but, it’s limited to one’s creativity and knowledge of mapping. You’re right, there seemingly aren’t a lot of people embracing it for use with Traktor and there isn’t much info about it either. The Pioneer Traktor mapping is cool and fairly robust but, it’s not for everybody. You’d definitely want to get into mapping if you plan to use this controller, especially if you want to implement it’s velocity sensitivity. One drawback of the SP1 for me is, the lack of multiple LED colors on the pads.

I guess, for stems and loops, I would recommend the F1.. For hotcues, one-shots, tone play stuff, I would recommend the SP1. Honestly, with the way I like to play in Traktor, I couldn’t choose one or the other. I hope this info helps you determine what would be best for you.
