{RANT}So I played my first club/bar last night…

…and I am NEVER going to do it again. The constant harassment, asking to play LATIN MUSIC over and over and over. Damn bachelorrette party. This particular club is in downtown Anchorage Alaska and there were 4 black people there that kept asking for hip hop. So i played some hip hop and EVERYONE but them left the dance floor. After my set i go over to a Dubstep show that my 2 partners were playing at it was bliss…fuck the club man…fuck…the…club

NO, fuck THAT club

Now I’m no expert (this is my first post), but if a few people were bugging me to play a song I knew would empty the dance floor, I wouldn’t play it.

That said, that really really sucks. Look on the bright side, at least it’s club experience .

^^^^^
What he said.

Been there, 10X over. Some clubs are just lame.

I agree with upas at least its experience. dont let it put you of doing it again though. Maybe try and find somewhere which is aimed at your genre of music.

You learn more from the bad gigs than you do the good ones…

pfffffffff, nope, take it on the chin like a man, you haven’t done it properly, you haven’t PR experience to deal with such people and situations… you’re not ready yet… its more than just pushing your favourite records even if people think it is.

THIS!

You played the wrong place on the wrong night

Nothing wrong with requests - if that’s the type of place it is. Take some of the stuff that was requested last time, and be better prepared the next time.

The above is only applicable if it’s a paying gig. If they’re not giveing you cold hard cash, f*ck 'em. Play whatever you want!

DJ’s should be like Graffiti writers. Have aliases. (Graff writers go out and bomb illegally under one alias, and do legal pieces under another name - keeps the filth off their tails!)).

Play your paid gig’s as your alias (“DJ Crowd Pleasa”), play your “proper” club night/party gigs as your “credible” alter ego (“Your name here”)…

Buffalo thats a really good way of putting things. I used to do a radio show which was all pumping house and chart am not really into pumping house and chart music. But did basically what you just said. A different name for different ocassions. However if you dont like playing the music your spinning then it becomes hard and frustrating no matter what the moneys like.

As long as it covers the cost of your gear lust, it’s worth the pain, right?

There are worse (and HARDER) ways of earning £ to pay for new gear.

When I begun, I thought I would play the music I wanted to, It worked… somehow. But once you get the idea of “the more you play what people want to hear, the more gig you get” concept, everything is more simple.

Put you ego on the side for few hours, life’s too short  Nothing bad to fit a couple of your favorite one in the lot though. You must have your “own sound signature” somewhere in the set.

Just be ready to play anything. You just need to “build up” the night 'round your “Fan” first, once done, they’ll follow you whatever you play. Dancefloor is your “paycheck”, don’t f*ck with it

Do people just take gigs for the sake of taking gigs? When I play out, I get booked based on the style people are known for me to play. I don’t have an arsenal of crapy music that I would not enjoy playing, so I don’t take gigs where people would expect me to play it.

shrug

Sorry to hear man.

As said before some clubs suck, and some nights suck too.

Just because a club has one good night does not mean all the nights are good.

Instead of lookin for good clubs, look for good nights.

It is a really valid point of view NewManSoon. It really depend of your point of view about DJing.

For me, DJing is all about music, people and party. I spin music to make people dance… period. Even after 29 years on the market and 20ish years in club, I still have "goose bumps " when people yell when they hear “their favorite” track, cheezy or not.

Spread love

Got any Candy Flip?

Same as this! Ive often been asked to do birthdays or weddings etc and the money would have been really good(oh you’re a Dj,so you do weddings?)
It’d be like getting a death metal band to play in a church on Sunday morning!

I play for those reasons, but I choose to do it where I get to play music I enjoy playing to a crowd that that enjoys it. Say I get booked for a trance gig, i get booked because they are promoting that type of party. Now it may be a mixed ravey crowd , but for the most part , what I play is going to be enjoyed by most. See where I am going with this? I can make a set flow , tell a story (yes that sounds cheese), but if I was in one of these clubs where it is all mixed and you have people coming up asking for the latest deadr4t tune, I would start punching people.

My point it is, you can play the music you love and not get shit on, just pick your gigs appropriately.

Thanks guys for the encouragement. I wrote this rant right after i got back from the gig and was just LKSDJFLKSDJF. I got paid 100 bucks for 5 hours. As soon as i started playing this lady handed me a 10 and a printed “setlist” of songs she NEEDED played. Kinda messed with my head. I was covering for the normal DJ because he was playing a Rave. I got a text from him the next day that they management loved me and i am the default substitute for him. Good ego boost but i really dont know if i wanna go back to this particular venue…or you know maybe it was just a bad night…idk. GAH.

The bit that really really bugged me was the CONSTANT harassment from the same people. PLAY MICHAEL JACKSON FOR US COUGARS LOOK AT OUR TITS…go away maam im playing house…stop…stop…/wrist

Run!

Bro, if its a cougar night, get the hell outta there quick
