recording vinyl to live

recording vinyl to live

trying to put together a live apc 40 dj set together with turntables when i record the turntables in through the m audio soundcard the turntables sound tragic pops and crackles why and how do i resolve this please help

First step would be to clean the records.

definatly isnt that its fine if i assign live through a channel on my mixer but then i cant record my turntables into live so cant record a complete set

its fine until i turn up the volume on the channel on live then the turntables distort

then.. don’t turn up the volume, no?

but then when i listen to to set back theres no volume so i have to keep it up its probably a soundcard issue just lookin on you tube and other people have the same problem its an m audio audiophile

so you’re using your soundcard to boost the TT signal?
not a good idea.. you’ll need to buy a phono preamp.
Preamps for TTs are different than your average preamp.
If I remember correctly vinyls are EQd differently than digital forms and the preamps help balance the signal.. I’m guessing this the best way to get a quality press, because it is standard.

so instead of just pluging the mixer straight to input of the soundcard it needs a preamp inbetween the mixer and soundcard is that right

THIS ONE

OR THIS ONE

yep.. DJ mixers come with built-in RIAA preamps (phono ins)..
thats why you just see people plugging straight in.

I can’t comment on any phono preamps because I’ve only ever used ones in mixers!

the biggest thing is to make sure its RIAA

You should list more specifics. What do you mean “mixer” and where does the apc40 fit into the equation?

Are you just trying to record into??? Ableton Live?

You’d get some proper help if you clearly explained what you have hooked up and how?

TTs into an m audio interface (mixer), innit?

boosts the gain in ableton and gets distortion

cheers for your help il get hold of one and give it a try only thing im not sure of is that the decks are running through my mixer before it connects to soundcard and you say dj mixers have preamps built in why do you then need to pre amp again

I think your confused, re-read the replies carefully as well as your own posts.

There could be a number of issues why you are getting distortion, but for anyone to offer better help YOU need to be specific?

What kind of Mixer
What are you recording to? Software?
What are your latency setting for the software using to record?
How do you have things hooked up? In what order?

sorry peps this is the set up

two vestax turntables hooked up to vestax pcv275 mixer through phono 1 and 3

mixer master then going to input 1 and 2 on m audio soundcard audiophile

laptop running ableton live 8 and apc 40 then connected via fire wire to soundcard [obviously]

soundcard output 1 and 2 then running to basic technics stereo amp

sample rate on the sound card is 44100 same as in live

asio buffer size 256 samples same as in live

ableton latency is overall 15.6 ms [input 6.89 and output 8.71]

i have no eqs or compressors on the turntable channel in live or the master which it is running through audio on all channels except monitoring is on 1 and 2 audio

iv tried turning it down on the volume on the sound card and up on the mixer gain and vice versa but like i say if i keep the volume off or right down on the turntable channel in live its fine just when i need it up which i do to record into live through the turntable the nasty pops and crackles and distortion happens
