Remix contest and "originality"

Remix contest and “originality”

Hi,

Just entered a remix contest for a track ( Just Kiddin - thinking about it) and before doing my own take on the track i didn’t listen to a single other remix so I wouldn’t be influenced. So yesterday I post my remix (i’m new to this shit so well… it’s far from perfect) and then i go around and look other remixes , especially the best ranked ones aaaaand… a lot of remixes that sound kinda close. same eton messy/majestic casual/thesoundyouneed sounding tracks if you know what i mean.

Well, is it worth it to go another way like i did or should I just stick to the original style of the track ? ( that I like btw just wanted to make something different) and should I have more punch, i mean not a chill take on the track just go club banger all the time ? most winners are bangers :open_mouth:

here is my track: https://wavo.me/justkiddin/thinking-about-it-remix-comp/just_kiddin_thinking_about_it_klaus_prime_remix__12388453173510000

You can see other people by browsing through the entries !

Peace

The only feedback I’ve ever read from an artist that ran a remix contest was that he just stopped listening to tracks that sounded too much like his original after a few seconds and moved on.

But, it depends on whether it’s being judged by the artist/label or by fans voting. If fans are voting, I think it might be worth a short to do what the leaders did better. Also…buying votes, since those contests are stupid anyway. If it’s being judged by the label, I’d imagine that it should be something they can release but significantly different from the original. That being said, I only ever enter contests to get stems to play with, not to try to win. So take what I’ve said with a grain of salt.
