rewiring tonearm on sl 1200

hello dj tt forum

so I will be rewiring two mg5s over the course of the next few weeks as me schedule allows. if there has already been a threat detailing the step by step instructions could some on link me?

the questions i’m really after (as i’ve been studying how to do this for about a month) is what type of solder is best? I have a 40 watt iron-- will that be too much? any tricks to soldering the wires to the board?.. its been a while. i’ve read that after removing the old solder, it helps to lay some solder down, let cool, than go a head and quickly solder the wire to the board-- as to avoid overheating the board.

is that correct?

all in all I am a little unsure of my self since this is the first time I will be attempting this.

oh last question.. there is rust on the 4 prong end to the tone arm… will 99% isopropyl on a q tip remove the rust without damaging the connection?

come this think of it, these the end of the tonearm that I am unsure about. if there is anyone who can provide picture of the resolder on that end id greatly appreciate it!!

cheers from boston,
ned

I’ve not done this work but I’ve soldered lots.

One of these is really handy for removal:

the trouble comes when the contacts get stuck inside the tonearm! I’ve had two of them replaced because of this.

I’ve done the work. as long as you’re very fast with the iron, 40w will be okay. It’s really not that difficult, it’s more a pain in the ass threading the tonearm wires.

Yes I agree

I did mine last year with a cheap soldering iron with no problems , just be quick and don’t linger!!
Threading can be a pain, take a photo of the routing and the wires before you de-solder anything so you can re-route and re-solder exactly as it was before you removed it.
