Im in the market for a 4 channel mixer, not necessarily scratch certified but able to hook up traktor to mix digitally.
Now i’ve searched mixers far and wide and came across the RMX 80 by Reloop. A pretty low price and reportedly solid sounding and punching above it’s weight in terms of features when compared to other mixers of the same price bracket. It’s even showing a fairly standard ‘Club standard’ layout, though i’ve no idea what they’re comparing it to… It’s even got 3 USB Ports in a built in hub for connecting additional MIDI controllers and the like.
It’s one reported draw back is the lack of MIDI mapping capability but doesn’t seem too much of a bother if you’re using traktor with an X1 say.
Does anyone have experience with one of these or maybe any suggestions why it might not be a good purchase as it seems to be kicking the shins of the others im looking at!
As Patch says it looks like an awful lot of mixer for the money. I was (am) a big fan of the previous RMX-40 mixer, a mate has had one for a couple of years and it’s been great. The LED channel metering is very good, the displays are good, lots of connectivity, and it’s built extremely well too.
I think my only criticism of it was that the channel faders are perhaps a bit too ‘loose’ feeling for my liking, I prefer them to have a bit more resistance- but obviously this is personal preference.
Assuming the RMX-80 has the same level of build quality etc as the 40 (and the other Reloop gear I’ve used) I think it would be a great purchase. As you pointed out the only real draw back is lack of midi, but if you are using it with external controllers this isn’t an issue. Heck I’ve been using my Denon x1600 with Traktor for ages now and despite having it’s own dedicated midi section (with rotary encoders etc) I don’t think I have used it once.
DJ Angelo is linked with Reloop, and I bet he provided feedback re: those up-faders.
Very often, up-faders are USELESS for scratching because of too much resistance - which is exactly the OPPOSITE of what some mixing DJ’s (see above) want from an up-fader…
Seems like Reloop are leaning towards the side of the scratch DJ.
Haha yeah I figured it was probably intentional, I’ve got a couple of 2-channel mixers with very loose upfaders that are probably a dream to scratch on!
I love a slippery cross-fader but that’s about it for me.
Hopefully i’m going to be able to have a bit of hands on with a few mixers including the RMX 80 at a shop down in London this weekend so i can have a feel of the faders etc, though it’s not something that i’m all to bothered about. If anything i’m not all too keen on my Z2’s line faders dampened feel anyway.
I just can’t wrap my head around the price and what you get, it’s pretty impressive. There a few features missing that stop it being deemed a ‘Pro mixer’ but it certainly seems bedroom/Bar worthy and combined with Traktor it should be a good setup. The icing on the cake would be a scratch certified soundcard but i spose you can’t have everything. My TT’s are pretty much used exclusively for vinyl nowadays anyway.
I’ve also seen the RMX 60 that despite being a lower spec model lists a DJ soundcard but as to what use it’s for i don’t know. It has got less effects and lacks the USB ports however.
I did think that too but with the RMX-80 you get the (DJM-esque) individual channel filters and rear usb hub- at the expense of the midi-capability of the x1600.
The 1600 is a beast of a mixer though, especially for someone looking to start a Traktor setup from scratch (no pun intended).
The RMX 60 is an even cheaper option, not sure if it has the usb hub that the 80 has though- I assume something must have gone to justify the price difference!
Here in the UK you are generally looking at a very leggy DJM800 for the price of a brand new RMX-80. My local classifieds show a couple of worn examples with buttons/pots that need replacing advertised for similar money to a new RMX-80.
Could still be worth it if the OP isn’t bothered about midi, but he’d need to double his budget to get any DJM new or warrantied (assuming he is after a 4-channel with colour effects so 800 or above).
I’ve had a good look at the DNX 1600 and it does tick all the boxes, however MIDI isn’t such a hug selling point to me as i’ve got a couple of X1’s for controlling trakor.
It does have the scratch soundcard however, but i don’t think it’d be worth the extra money for the sake of it as i use my TT’s for vinyl and i don’t see myself using CDJ’s for Traktor anymore.
The DJM is a pretty steep price increase over here in the UK. From what i’ve seen the DJM 750 is often compared with the RMX 80 as they came out at the same time, but the DJM has the pioneer price tag to boot. The effects section is impressive, however i’d be using Traktor for 90% of my effects anyway.
I can afford just about anything for my next mixer thanks to a bonus i recently received (and once the boring stuff was taken care of i have a bit left over for kit!) however i’m much like patch and like getting a good deal for my money and this seems to be too good to be true, so i’m doing a bit of research.
not necessarily recommending it , just wondering why not for the price point. its not more than the reloop…I guess im trying to learn something special about the reloop…
