Run Trakor At It’s Finest, Even If You Don’t Run An Expensive Machine

seeing how most people here including myself have a shared regard for a certain program (which ill keep nameless) considering at times it’s a love/hate relationship with us PC users when it gets to be a bit unstable if things aren’t accommodated just right for it.. well since my stay here at DJTT iv read a grip of tech advice & tweeks to help that program run at it’s potential & its not only helped with “that program” but teach me a lot in general. so iv rounded a few up, including mine, to help a few friends iv gotten in to traktor -uh-..i mean..that program, to make it easy for them & you

clean/update your computer

disable windows sounds (you dont want them in yr mix)

above’s directions: http://www.audioforums.com/windows-xp-optimization.php

Speed up your system

have an old Flash Drive or SD card? (using Microsoft Readyboost you can use it like additional RAM!)

explained here: Experience the Power of AI with Windows 11 OS, Computers, & Apps | Microsoft Windows

Readyboost direction by Windows Help & Support:
"1. Plug a flash drive or flash memory card into your computer.

  1. In the Autoplay dialog box, under General options, click Speed up my system.

  2. In the Properties dialog box, click the ReadyBoost tab, and then do one of the following:

  • To turn ReadyBoost off, click Do not use this device.

  • To use the maximum available space on the flash drive or memory card for ReadyBoost, click Dedicate this device to ReadyBoost. Windows will leave any files already stored on the device, but it’ll use the rest to boost your system speed.

  • To use less than the maximum available space on the device for ReadyBoost, click Use this device, and then move the slider to choose the amount of available space on the device you want to use.

  1. Click OK." & your Flash drive or SD card is now acting as additional RAM! (so to speak)

next

clean your (actual) RAM

& apply windows prefetch to your program

above’s directions: Improving Traktor on a P.O.S. PC

General tweaks

always keep your laptop plugged in & go into power option (windows 7: control panel > power options) & select high performance

use USB 2.0 cables for controllers & soundcard (less chance of latency, among other things)

find in the DJTT store: http://techtools.myshopify.com/collections/dj-gear/products/hi-quality-usb-cables

download/install the latest ASIO4ALL drivers currently: ASIO4ALL - Universal ASIO Driver For WDM Audio

look on your product manufacturers websites for drivers updates for your controllers, soundcards, as well as updates for your DVS/DAW softwares.

download a freeware program called Game Booster that temporally stops all unwanted processes by switching into “Gaming Mode” at: Download Advanced SystemCare 19 Free: Clean, Tune-up and Optimize Windows.

disable network connections
(In windows 7 click Control Panel > Network&Sharing Service > Change Adapter Settings, click “disable” located above the connection type for both)

also disable bluetooth (unless your using a wii mote )

If your computer is still running real slow & these changes don’t bring it up to life your most likely running way low on RAM memory, RAM are these little sticks you can easily upgrade in both laptops and desktops that can be found for really cheep & make a world of difference on how fast you computer runs (only RAM made specifically for your brand & model) ..even in worse case scenarios like if you have to reformat, at least then you can make the best of the situation & upgrade to a better version of windows.. (I recommend Ultimate 7)

if you know further tech advice it’s appreciated///

Thanks stephen some great tips there. Gamebooster eh, might look into that tomorrow.

My two cents.

On my girls PC (512 mb ram) It takes a sec to disable each program, but is worth the wait,
put it on hers for it’s actual use, shes a gamer

I recommend crap cleaner daily, the registry cleaner is better than $80 Norton 360’s

woah, this is an amazing post, i was looking for something like this since im running everything of my laptop, its an extremely solid laptop (4gb ram, intel core 2 duo processor, tablet, ect.)
but i have had it for a good year now, and all the crap on it builds up and it doesnt run as fast at it used to haha, thanks tons for this!

run traktor at its finest? get a mac

i tend to agree with chris pirillo that registry cleaners do WAY more harm than good.

Or get a mac and do nothing of the above :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously, I can use traktor, browse the internet, burn a cd, and use uTorrent all at the same time with zero glitches.

My MBP is 2 years old…

Might check out gamebooster. The /prefetch thing is a complete and utter urban myth though, I’m afraid.

i give it :smiley::smiley::smiley::smiley::smiley:'s

going to really go for it and try to lock things up with that running tomorrow. had a couple since getting my nanopad, but none yesterday when i ran gamebooster, but that was only for half hour play.

i found unplugging the controllers works to sort it. guessing it’s the device drivers getting bogged down? might try a batch file to restart the drivers using devcon, should save time…

auslogics resitry defrag, been using 18 months, no hidden bullshit (like some), free to d/l + install and makes a noticeable difference (on untidy systems that aren’t properly maintained, if you use it regularly you won’t notice a difference either way, unless you leave it til performance turns crap again to run it)

This is a great post! Thanks for sharing.

If you’re considering using a Mac, don’t assume that all the bugs, freezes, glitches, etc will go away just because you have a Mac. ALL computers require proper maintenance, not just PCs, so don’t think you can just run your Mac until it blows up without maintaining.

There might be less steps in maintaining with a Mac (I really just run DiskWarrior and the Disk Utility function at least every 3-4 weeks), but it still work that you have to do.

glad this helped a few cats out, id like to acknowledge a few members of the fourm for lending me their tech savv,

Good post, I like that it puts balance to the Mac is superior attitude. A lot of people can’t offord a Mac especially when you account for controllers and software so the “buy a mac problem solved” mentality is really just banter in means of productive input, thou by all means everyone is entitled to their input.

Good post Stephen. Im sure many will find this useful.
I think the points you make would be good subject for a Sticky for noobs or anyone encountering issues with PCs.

Gamebooster is awesome! bloody hell “the unmentioned program” is running like a rocket now on the pc

found a program for managing devices, similar to device manager in windows, but with an ‘easier’ interface and has options for disabling devices.
it’s called ‘devmanview’ - short for device manager view (i assume).

simple enough, just select the device, and hit the red button. you can use ctrl click to select multiple devices, luckily, and they stay selected. so you can then minimize the window, and bring it back up to start them again. there is also a ‘disabled’ column. so if you accidently click away from them you can sort the devices that way for quick restart. Annoyingly it doesn’t have an option for saving profiles, the save option it has just puts all the device/driver details in a txt file

!!IMPORTANT!!
Requires being run as admin to work best (vista/7). which as we all know can be done from the right click menu.

However, if you have used the ‘kill explorer’ technique you won’t have that option. Instead you can open task manager (using crtl+alt+del), go to file, new task, then put in the path, i.e
d:\devmanview\devmanview.exe /admin:yes - this last part starts it in admin mode, tested it with command prompt, normal cmd starts with the directory pointing at user folder, with admin argument, it points at sytem32
I also recommend this for gamebooster, just feels like it works better/less restricted.

Or you can go to the registry, and put links to these under;
HKey_CurrentUser\Sofware\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run
In the pane on the right, right click, select new string, right click on it, select modify and under value put the path to the program and the admin argument above.

Make sure this is done in the DJ user you have set-up. If you are unsure how to open the registry from task manager, file, new task, regedit. If you are unsure about editing the registry, DON’T DO IT!!!
However if you pm me (with the path details of the programs) i’m happy enough to put together a registry patch you can install.
