S4 or s2

S4 or s2

Im thinking of getting one of these dedicated controllers, what do you guys think, get the s2 right away, or save a lilttle more till the s4?

Im a 2 deck kinda guy, and if i wanted to trigger out samples or something i’d map them to my midi keyboard, seems like this answers the question, but i wanna hear something from you guys?

I saved for the s4 and I’m glad I did. (mainly because I use external decks sometimes)

differences from the s4.

Lacks control over effects units 3 and 4.
Loop recorder control gone.
The filter knobs are gone.
Ability to switch decks (platters and faders).
Loop length indicators.
Cue points 5-8.
Phono inputs (for DVS control). Hooking up external decks in nice.

The price is a lot cheaper though and may justify buying it over the s4.

I had the exact same dilemna, but you should definitely save up for S4, when your saving that amount of money, you should wait till you can do it right.

Just think about what the S4 can do what the S2 can’t and decide if this is stuff you actually need in your DJ sets.

I really like using filters and that, since they’e gone on the S2..but like you guys are saying, i might aswell save for the S4, and actually throw in sample decks on my Dj sets..

Well, if you can put up with patience, then wait until you have saved enough.

a lot of the stuff the S4 can do that the S2 cant can be added to the S2 with a non-standard map (filters, 4-deck, etc)

S2 has booth output, S4 doesnt.

S4 external inputs only work if laptop is running

you can easily fit the S2 into a carry-on roller bag.

With the S4 you less carrying options.

I was going to post in here last night, the only real difference the s4 has inputs and a loop length indicator. The S2 is easier to travel with, has a booth out, same software, much better price

The S2 can control everything the the S4 can, just add a map. The S2 map I make has more controls than an S4.

The S2 makes more sense to me, you still have control over the sample decks, and with the new controller from ni coming out soon, we wont be using the s2 or s4 for the sample decks. The money you save will buy the new controller

I do like the S4, but I went with the S2

I’ll go with the S2 for reasons listed in this forums, seems like i can do whatever the S4 can with my S2 and some extra mappings. Plus saving like 400$ more is going to be hell of a long time.

BTW: think i could have this mappings you use for your S2?

+1 on Jiggle

unless you don’t need the inputs of the S4, S2 is fine. And the cost diff is worthed, especially with the new NI deal.

I love my S4, but i’ll be just fine with S2

Can you explain me what’s this inputs on the S4 and the Booth out on the S2 used for? like, what do i plug into this?

If you want to use cdj’s or decks you’l need an input, the s4 has 4 I think, the s2 only has outputs (but can be used with ni audio interfaces)

The S4 only has a master out, the S2 has master and booth out,
basically you can set the level of the booth out separate from the master out

So you’re saying you can use the S4 as the mixer with 2 cdj’s?

Yeah, you can with the s2 and an audio 4/6/8/10 as well. It will mix through traktor, You cant use them without a computer attached.

Just got an S2 today, headed home from work in a minute to hook it up. Im hoping to use it in my set tonight!! Its 4pm here in the UK so i have time to practice with it before my set at 10

Agree with the arguements for it. Carry weight and size is a massive issue as i play in many bars and small clubs with tiny booths. You get filters on the effects units so i dont see a problem there at all!!! And as you guys have said, map it up to your needs

s2 filters

My s2 has filters, it comes with the DJ TECH TOOLS MAPPING.

yeah you can plug CDJs into an S4 but they only work when laptop is running. Better off using S2 and plug that and CDJs into a mixer (if yo uhave CDJs you probably have a mixer already anyway)

If you dont own CDJs at home but wanna switch between them and the S2 when playing in a club just plus S2 into a spare channel in the club’s mixer. You’ll have to use the mixer’s headphone out instead of the S2’s when mixing between CDJ and S2 but that’s no biggie (I take 2 pairs of headphones to a gig anyway)

then use the money you save to get an fx pad, new headphones whatever

always an interesting topic. I went though the same thing. in the end I went with the S4, and personally, Im glad I did.

at a gig, I would be fine with a S2 because I like to keep it simple and use the sample decks much less. The filter knobs during gigs are clutch though. It would be hard for me to let them go.

the reason I say Im happy with the S4, is because when I bedroom DJ or play for friends I like to push the S4 to its limits and use virtually everything it offers. I would feel too limited with the S2.

In the end the only drawbacks to the S4 are the size and the price. Obviously if you can use the money you save to buy another controller with the S2, you could easily compromise the lost features. Honestly the only reason I dont use the DJTT S4 map is because of the Loop indicator issue. Thats not a problem with the S2. Add an x1 or MF Pro and I’m sure you could do more than the S4. just my thoughts, hope it helped

A poll on this topic would be cool.. if there isn’t one already out there

I understand that the S4 allows DVS control, can you play regular vinyl through the S4 by switching the decks to live input? I’m thinking about streamlining my setup and abandoning my mixer, but I would still like the option to play regular vinyl
