Kaon amen to that! I bloody LOVE scratch perverts!!!
“music can be sound or silence of any length” - simple but effective!
isnt that actually beat juggling - and, he’s just not working the crossfader properly, so his back spin is playing out loud. i agree, that isn’t all that talented.
and, like bento said, u could do it a lot cleaner and with a lot less difficulty with cue points (but, then it isnt totally uber dmc battle style-y)
and, to avoid being a total hater. i think scratching is tight; and if i could do it better, i would. For instance, i like how James Zabiela scratches harmoniously in his sets (even if it is pretty much the same rhythm every time). it’s rare enough, and it doesnt sound out of place.
Zabiela is great!
I almost have as much respect for him as Krush!
that is perhaps one of the most skillful scratching videos that’s been posted, and yes, the guy has skill and very fast hands, but - to me, it’s a cacophony of sounds. there’s no flow!
No flow?
Damn, than I am just hearing things?
scratch DJing and dance/club DJing are IMO very different beasts. If you are at a Scratch Perverts (or any scratch DJ) gig you will see that most people are not dancing hard out… they are watching the fucking screens… cos its a show more then anything.
I mean for example most (… actually all) of those DMC sets you cant dance to… its not about that. It has its own skill set which is awesome in itself…
midian thats true, particularly about the DMC sets.
However i think scratching can still add a lot to a mix that really makes you want to dance. I’ve heard some awesome Hip Hop mixes where scratching is used so well to bring in sections of the next track and then just DROP IT. Sounds so good.
you guys are looking at scratching in a mix standpoint but look at it in a battle situation tho.
check this video out this is like the 5th video i have posted
Bad Boy Bill 1989 dmc battle set
this was one of the greatest sets i have ever seen.
Oh god, I don’t even know where to start…
First, alot of the examples posted aren’t really scratching, they’re juggling. All those examples are just flat out turntablism. And I’m dumbfounded how, on a site for controllerism which is really just different means to the same ends as turntablism, that someone cannot “get” turntablism. I don’t mean to talk down to anyone here. I’m just kinda confused here.
Let’s straighten a few things out here.
Juggling is what’s going on with that first video, where the DJ is bouncing back and forth between two turntables, rearranging the track by jumping around to different cue points. Now instead of triggering the cue points on an array of buttons, turntablists have to position one record while the other is playing, then crossing over.
Scratching on the other hand is when a DJ is manipulating a sample by pushing/pulling/pausing with his hand, while cutting on and off the audio with a fader. An example (qbert):
Scratching itself, really needs to be thought of as playing an instrument. Sometimes a musician performs a solo, sometimes they are merely part of the song. Sometimes the musician sucks, or sometimes they over do the solo. I mean I was saw a band where the drummer went into a solo, at first it was dope, but 15 minutes into that solo I just wanted dude to stop.
Just cause I want to through this in… Gunkhole:
Gunkhole is the [4 letter word omitted].
Well spectwon, I wasn’t even going in on scratching, I was going in about great turntablists.
Not talking about crabs, scribbles, babies, uzis, transformers, faderless echos, chirps and shit. ![]()
A friend just sent these links. Now, that’s what I consider enjoyable scratching.
On saturday night I went to a Australian Hip-Hop show and the DJ (DJ Skoob) did a couple of battle sessions. He had recently won our State qualifier for DMC and will soon be going at it in the National DMC Qualifier.
Anyway cut a long story short he did some amazing shit! hahaha. It made me think of this thread LOL
Just wanted to add this video to the list, these kids from japan are pretty good.

Always nice to see the DJs that are able to cut it at DMCs. ![]()
