Second Life DJing

Second Life DJing

I was watching a Frontline documentary (www.pbs.org) about digital technology. They mentioned Second Life and how the digital world is replacing the real world (people here on DJTT can relate a la vinyl vs. digital debate).

A quick glance at the Second Life website shows virtual dance clubs w/ live DJs. I was wondering if anyone on here has either a) DJed on Second Life or any sort of virtual platform or b) listened to a mix on there.

I am not too familiar with Second Life’s system of exchange. But perhaps you charge fees to get into these clubs?

Im too busy making a mess of my real life

Yup, Sasha played a set at Hacienda which was broadcasted on Second Life live, officially endorsed by Radio 1. He was rendered digitally and everything.

Scumfrog, DJ Rap, and D:Fuse have done this as well. It’s a fairly easy process so I’m told.

i shudder at the thought of going to a (virtual) club and listening to a live dj and NOT moving my feet … :stuck_out_tongue:

I DJ inside Second Life, its a great way to practice, and get criticism to your mixes from some of the other Djs’ inside second life.

warning:

theres a TON of super super unstable women in second life. i say this as a guy with an avatar that has a joined date of 2005

i got a friend (who’s a furry) that told me about one of his (furry) mates that pays their rent with second life. forget how exactly now, something to do with 2nd hand purchases from their virtual store.

I was curious–do you do the mixes live or just upload a pre-recorded one? If you do it live, how do you stream into Second Life?

i’d guess using something like shoutcast? they’d give you the ip and port number to link to and away you go

there are many stream hosts in second life that you can rent as a dj.

100 Listener Slots
192kbps Bitrate
Monthly Billing
CentovaCast Control Panel
Free Backup Stream
99.8% Uptime

looks like about 7.50 per month

can i then charge 2nd lifers to hear it? say 50p x 100 listeners = £5 x 1/week = £20/month = profit

no, in fact most clubs will require you to pay for your own stream and allow you the privilege of playing on their land. the biggest clubs actually charge you a fee to play there.

now that said, the house music scene, theres really only 3 clubs that mean anything and you’d be lucky to make 5-6 bucks for a 3 hour set.

gol, anjuna, or scoutlounge.

that sucks

…why would it be worth anyone’s time to get shafted and play a virtual set in a game :disappointed:, I’d rather play on an online radio station..
