Depends entirely on your workflow, and I’m planning on getting a twitch to take the place of the VCI so i don’t know how that will change things.
All I can really say is that if you’re looking for another controller to add something that the VCI can’t practically already do, the MF or MF pro is probably it.
look up JesC vid on youtube. He midi mapped his DJM-700 to the fader and eq movements within ableton. Haven’t tried it yet, but lots of users have been asking for more support than just two mixers.
I do. I have a VCI-300. Had an NS7 and contemplated just getting V7’s to go with the DJM-800. I’m a big fan of Itch and I think it has some good featurs that SSL does not have, and I think the next version of Itch will be a big hit ----- but I still found SSL more enjoyable. I feel now having both that Itch is the controller version of SSL and it’s starting to catch up feature wise.
How do you like your 300? Itch is beginning to look very appealing to me. The v7 seems like a fantastic piece of kit paired with a good mixer, it seems awesome. What do you think the disadvantages of itch vs. traktor are?
I love Itch man. It’s such a streamlined 1:1 interaction. Itch 2.0 should fill some of the gap that is missing feature wise between Itch and SSL. The VCI-300 is a great portable system. The jogwheel response is a good as it gets and the pitch faders are also high resolution. The NS7/V7 has the best jog response out. The biggest and only real drawback to Itch is that you are stuck with the controller you use and do not have much flexibility. That’s the only real drawback. It could use some help with effects, and we know video and bridge are also coming to Itch soon, so that’s a program that’s on the up and up.
On the rare occasions I daydream about serato, I imagine an all in one program which just activates the features of whatever you plug into it. Plug in an SL card and you have Scratch functionality, plug in a controller and you can use your controller features whilst also using DVS. Right now it’s all or nothing, one or the other.
Some controllers have brilliant mappings for ITCH, but you can’t do anything like that in SSL.
Traktor of course will do whatever you ask it to, but it has its downsides as well.
As I’ve acquired more DJ gear over the past year, I’ve eventually ended up with just using my laptop and a MIDI Fighter Pro. The VCI works great for a home setup since I don’t have any decks or regular DJ mixer, but out on the road I’m all about the MIDI Fighter Pro (previously the classic) and taking 2 line outs from the Audio 2 and plugging them into a DJ mixer.
I can understand that and Haze’s original post, I was thinking about that the other day. I started to rely to much on facts (is my unit engaged, is this button ok, what does this sign tells me, is my mapping following what it’s supposed to do, etc, etc…) and not on feel and the music.
It reminds me when I got my first mixer, there was those two led indicators telling you the beat (a kinda beat phase monitor) but that was very approximative. The first counsel I got was to hide those to be really able to listen and focus on music (or just for the sake, the indicators didn’t work correctly).
So yeah I feel the main trap of all the new stuff available is to loose the feeling.
A huge difference for me on controller is that they don’t feel like instruments like turntables and cdjs or a solid pro mixer are. They are big, sturdy, with quite large controls too. You can really ‘play’ on those if you know what I mean. Not a feeling I get with controllers most of the time, being not as reliable, not as well built usually, with smaller controls and or of lesser quality themselves.
And there you have. One of the most concise comments on the subject I have personally seen. It’s not about vinyl, CD, DVS or Controller. It’s not about SYNC or no SYNC. It’s about feeling and how that translates to the floor. There will be many people who will be strict “controllerists” because they have no interest or ability in mixing using other setups - and that’s fine. For those that come from a TT/CD background there will always be something missing. I am in the process of going of getting some TTs and going DVS as I spent years on decks as love the creative side of my S4 but am missing out on the feeling and the fun. .
