Sick of iTunes? Let’s create an everyday musicplayer/manager for DJs!

I’m sick of iTunes’ lack of FLAC-support and JRivers Media Jukebox is also no option since it can’t export to iTunes and therfore deliver a useable library for Traktor and Scratch Live.

I play with the thought of coding the ultimative everyday musicplayer and manager which may also use Traktor’s and Scratch Live’s database.

What do you think about it?
Which features should such an application definitely have?

Smart playlists that automatically update in Traktor. Keep the star ratings consistent across both no matter which one the ratings are changed in. Ability to edit ALL of the tags in Traktor and build the aforementioned smart playlist off those. What about the ability to load into a deck from the megasuperawseom musicplayer?

Ummm VLC? I can manage my music library just fine without iTunes.

If I need more than what VLC can provide, I launch Traktor. I guess I don’t see much need for such an application as you are describing.

Interested in this. For me something useful would be hotkey assigned playlists, by which I mean you assign a playlist to a hotkey and when a track is highlighted in the library and you hit that key, the track is added to that playlist. But that might just be me lol.

AFAIK Neither Traktor nor VLC can move/rename/convert files or change their album art.

I’m talking about full fledged library-management.

@fullenglishprint: Sounds really good. I always hoped Traktor would get such a feature.

you can do that in itunes if you have a mac…juss sayin

You can??

I always I-Tunes, i like that program, i always change all titles, so i can find it with no problem in traktor. I think it’s just about you manage your own list, and what names you gave. I do it like this: every track makes me and the crowd go crazy, i name it Electro or Electro House, every track with a piano or calmer feeling like Avicii style i call it Progressive House, everything for the younger crowd in age 12-16 i call it Dutch House (i live in the netherlands and that’s what they like), that’s how i do it. So that i’m sure that i always have the right tracks for my crowd.

yes you can i have it so when i click command+1 it turns genre into house, command+2 turns genre into tech-house, etc when i click command+, it puts the song into peak hour playlist…these are scripts & application shortcuts i setup

BTW, there are ways to get iTunes to play FLAC files, do a Google search.

I’m intrigued, but I’m having trouble figuring out how to get something like this set up in automater. What rules did you set up and how?

[/threadjack]

As for the OPs software idea, anything that can be read in both SSL and Traktor would be all I care

you dont use automator…i have the scripts if you want them P.M me…but first you need to make a scripts folder into the itunes directory then i new menu will appear in itunes on the top bar (file,edit,view,..,..,.., scripts) you can do it manually there by clicking it but that gets tedious…then you go into system preferences…keyboard > application shortcuts > add the scripts name and the command you want and ta-da!

you can do this on the PC as well!

See this:

edit: btw, I’m well up for an alternative to itunes… as long as it has windows support!

itunes stopped rewriting iD3 tags for me ever since i upgraded from 10.0 to 10.1…

nonetheless a music library that renames/retags and syncs with traktors and seratos library would be awsome… if it automated mik and pn i would be willing to pay top dollar for it…

Yeah but it sucks IMO.

I have demand for such a program myself so I’ll likely create it anyways with a similar look and feel to iTunes.

The big idea is to manage and sync Traktor and Serato-libraries from that one place. I’ll start creating it with that in mind.

Maybe add a waveform? But I can’t really see the point in this as Serato has an excellent one anyway.

The only thing that annoys me with iTunes is the fact that there is no search bar hotkey, so you could add one of them

frustrated iFanboys always frustrated with perfect computer gizmo overlord. is mystery

wut ?

is mystery

I dont get why people need to use itunes or any program for that matter to manage playlists. I DIY in traktor itself. Its not perfect, but it works and I have no issues with tag management over several pieces of software.

Personally I hate itunes, getting an android phone allowed me to ditch itunes altogether. Never looked back. Good riddance.
