Simple question Technics SL-1200 still play normal?
The title is sorta confusing and I didn’t know how to make it simpler.
Background : I want to learn how to Scratch, but i still want to play normal music. I will mostly be practicing scratch at the house, but for the cost i might try to use 2 Technics SL-1200 , some mixer, Laptop and a Battle setup(think that’s what its called?) until i can get more gear.
i want to know if i buy a pair of Technics SL-1200, Can i still play normal music off of them and do they keep spinning or do i need a separate thing to do this. Like if i wanted to play a song on track A on traktor, does it automatically get synced into the Technics SL-1200. Sorry if i’m not giving a lot of details, but to be complenty honest i don’t know the words to use. Not because i’m a fanboy of pauly D , but i have found this video which is a setup i’m talking about for a visual.
Well you also need a DVS (digital vinyl system). this is comprised of software and a sound card, with special records. Serato and Traktor are the biggies here, I found my Traktor Scratch Duo software w/ Audio6 sound card for about $250. Basically what happens is the record, called a timecode record, sends a signal through the turntable’s RCA cables. The turntable’s RCAs are plugged into the sound card, which is connected by USB to the laptop. The software interprets the signal received by the sound card and sends the music out through the sound card to the mixer. Without a DVS, the turntables do still play music; music on vinyl though, not from your laptop.
And if you want to learn how to scratch, forget you ever heard the name Pauly D, and never bring him up again. DJs Qbert, Angelo, Shortee, Shiftee (with Dubspot), the Scratch DJ academy (all of these have youtube tutorials) or any previous DMC champs/finalists.
If you are asking if you can play regular records through traktor, yes you can.
You don’t need traktor to scratch though. All you need is a pair of turntables/cdjs, and some music. Scratch on battle records (qbert), scratch on your dads copy of dark side of the moon (I didn’t tell you that) or scratch on that copy of dolly partons first album that you won’t tell anyone about.
If you want to use your laptop though, you will need cd players or turntables, a mixer and a sound card (audio 4/6/8/10) and a copy of traktor. Or go with serato, basically the same thing, just a different program with different features.
Yeah thanks ALL THAT information, and putting so much effort into your post. So freindly down here at DjTT! Yeah i understand that basics and i’ve already got into djing. I just wanted to upgrade. I was just posting a video how the setup looked. I mean i will try to get some Vinyl, but when i play gigs like example, how does it work if i want to play uhmm “Sweedish house mafia - Save the world” Does it just play or does it go with the timecode and scratch it?
All timecode is, is a time signature pressed into the vinyl. Your software reads the time signature, and relates it to that point in the track as if the track was pressed into the vinyl instead. The music is all on your computer. On a basic level its not any different than using regular vinyl records. You can scratch, play it normally, backspin, beatjuggle, break, make it skip, everything you can do with a regular record.
Well, basically it turns your Turntable into a controller. Press play on the Turntable, and the track in Traktor will start playing, manipulate the vinyl, and it’s going to be like a jogwheel on a contorller (albeit with better resolution).
