I am currently making a social network for dj’s/producers/clubs/promoters its going to be called The DJ Point. What features would you like to see and what would get you on it. Any other comments welcome. I want it to be a usefull and fun tool for DJ’s. Thank you to anybody in advance who posts any ideas/ relevent comments. There are a couple allready out there but to be honest they are pants
i have to agree, the current social networking services are more than adequate especially when used in conjunction with the many forums targeted towards people involved in dance music culture.
but if i have any suggestions is this, seems like the general contention among people (myself included) about facebook is how it encourages people to forfeit their right to privacy - which to me is beyond warped. so when you make you site, avoid the whole invasion of privacy approach that big-facebook-brother has taken.
asmallworld.com clone made for dj’s? don’t think it will work, but take care of that privacy thingy and make something like a large area for posters and fliers for upcoming events near your location featuring the dj’s you follow/stick to.
The only item that is still not present on any social media, the opportunity to collaborate with other DJs on DJ sets. (See the DJTechTools SuperMixes etc)
+1. I think there’s a band site that has something like this for realtime collaboration. The tools are probably all there for it to work. I tried to do this with a friend but couldn’t figure out how to deal with latency but how cool would it be if there was some way that anyone could log into the site, squeeze a few songs into an ongoing mix, and play along with others. When your turn comes you just mix into the stream you hear, and the combo gets sent out to the next person in real time…
Part of my aim for the site is to have high area concentration. So there are lots of members in one area. I am based in the uk. Here an example say you are an electro dj in York you can search the database for other electro djs in york. or just any djs or for clubs or promoters that have electro nights. Also want to have VIP dj accounts for famous djs to get them involved how there profiles would be a bit more like a facebook fanpage. Would also like to use the site to arrange gatherings like some of the members have done on this site. However it will be alot easier to do it with the system i have in mind. Another feature I am currently working on is compertitions. So people with a club or promoter account can put up dj comps for residencies and other stuff. I know people have said there are other dj social networks however none of them are very well established. Most djs i know still use forums to contact and socialise on the web with other djs. Some one commented about privacy, however my idea was an open profile so people can view who arnt members. I have think this route is best as it intended to be a tool for djs to help them meet like minded people and get work. The profile pages would be member specific. So it would look like thedjpoint.com/djdemo
I like the utility behind the idea. Sort of a LinkedIn for Djs, eh? Search on MySpace leaves a lot to be desired but search on LinkedIn is spot on, and it sounds like you’d need something like that for your idea.
Someone started a Ning called The Crate a while back, that may have had a similar mission… in case you weren’t aware. May be worth getting to know them.
