a) zzzzzz
b) actually no, not zzzzz. it is pretty funny
c) thereās a golden nugget of truth wrapped up in all that there hyperbole
d) unfortunately the golden nugget isnāt massively insightful; shit sounds like shit sounds like shit. So stop being shit, basically
I have noticed a curious attitude in certain areas of the world, among certain sections of DJs, and on certain websites, and that post is a good example of it.
DJing used to be so forward thinking, so new in its outlook, but it is like for some folk, it got stuck in 1995 and has been there every since. Practically everything thatās happened, from CDJs to controllers to Ableton Live, is all wrong as far as theyāre concerned.
I remember certain DJs saying having three instead of two Technics was cheating!
Personally I really donāt dig a lot of controllerist routines etc - I am a ālet the music play, some producer slaved over thatā kind of guy, but hell I still find it all really exciting, I feel the joy of guys who love their loops, cuepoints and FX, and whatās more Iāll happily climb over other DJs to get a look at absolutely ANY new gear with all its possibilities!
Weāre all allowed different viewpoints, but itās the vitriol I donāt understand.
Itās the same thing really as seeing a car and immediately jumping to conclusions about the driver
i think once the dj is having fun then it gets everyone in the mood wheres the video of that old dude with the glasses djing?? now he new how to rock out!!
Sync does not a good DJ make. Neither does beatmatching.
Thatās like saying āWell, the saxophone player can hit the rhythm fine.ā
Too bad his tuning, intonation and notes are wrong. Oh, and he comes in a bar early. And in the wrong key.
I love digital vs the old way - I spend so much more time deconstructing the structure of the tracks I play so I can do 3-4 minute mixes with loads of EQ and stuff. After tax time Iām getting an Audio 10DJ so I can do 4 decks. Easier to do with a sync button but easier still to cock up to garbage sound.
HATERS GONNA HATE!
Can we please make a no bitching about haters rule please?
I be a mac hater
grrrrrr and a ableton hater but purely because its never worked for me ![]()
an Ableton* ![]()
If that is the case kind sir, you should have also corrected the āI beā  soooooooo haaaar ![]()
+1 lol
Ummā¦soā¦i didnāt read any of your replies.
The OP completely missed the point of the guyās flame.
He wasnāt hating on controllers, per se. He was hating on what many people do when they donāt have to spend time beat matching. Mostly, that turns out to be ruining a track with effects.
And I 100% agree with him (please look at my sig to see if I hate controllers).
It takes balls to stand there and groove out to a good track as opposed to constantly doing something. Learn that firstā¦then maybe sorta kinda think about using effects to spice something up.
Well said.
@mostapha - completely agree
Though presumably you wonāt read this so youāll be unaware of how awesome you are
True. More time to focus on the crowd and be jamming in your pajamas
I very rarely use effects, only time i ever use them is for a small buildup, or transitionāng, Are you trying to say there areānt any women at your clubs? Leave the booth for a few minutes and talk to people, and dance! I tend to spend more time on the dancefloor or at the edge of the booth talking to people than i do on the decks.
Ok, i play for a radiohit crowd on a friday+saturday so people dont mind if i leave the same song on for 7 mintutes. but generally people want to hear their song and belt it out to thier hearts content w/o getting confused cos your mashing it up with fx.
I use a couple FXā¦Delayā¦Ice Verb and BeatMasher.
Sometimes ā¦depending on the style and moodā¦i whip out some others!
I have not even really gotten to combo FX yetā¦hardly have the need!
But its great to KNOW how to make em and what they will be likeā¦in the event of me wanting to use it.
too much is OVERKILLā¦
I too feel for the producerā¦
Thusā¦remix in styleā¦and you will have their approval too.

Noā¦i subscribe to everything and usually check back.
I just didnāt want to read through 3-pages of āno, but Iām a real DJ and some anonymous guy on the internet said I wasnātā¦waaaahā. Iām not saying thatās what it was, and I donāt mean to insult anyone that posted thereā¦I honestly donāt have a clue what was saidā¦itās just happened more than once in the past.
And I use effects too, just like everybody else doesā¦just not every damn minute.
Iāve said this before, and Iāll say it again: the best gear in the world gets the f*** out of my way and lets me play what I hear in my head, whether thatās my own guitar riffs, my lame attempts at production, or someone elseās full track. Similarly, I kinda feel like the best DJs in the world get the f*** out of the musicās way and let it speak for itselfā¦coaxing it along and structuring it the best they can without ruining it.
Well I understand the sentiment. Its the feeling of many many people I go out there and see play, I ask myself how the hell they are even up there. Sure sync helps, but even people on serato wreck, and traktor. Its apparent they never learned to mix without software. I think it is pretty important to learn without software and controllers for a bit. Or if thats all you have at least cover the laptop screen for a while. Not just because of club standard bull, but because it makes you a better DJ, knowing how to build up, mix, learning your songs more, everything. That being said, I enjoy mixing at home without software because its fun and a challenge on harder tracks. When Iām out I use my software to avoid hiccups and have my entire library at my finger tips. But even then I go to some club owners and they want no laptops, so I have the ability to do as such.
I posted this in another thread but this conversation published in Dancecult focuses on this very topic, if anyoneās interested: Login
