why cant i just use a controller and mix without being hassle?

its just a random topic on controllerism vs people who uses tt and cdjs. the topic might have been covered before but seriously can i just concentrate on using controllers alone without being questioned and going through critisms with how easy using a software can be, with just a touch of a synch button but if its gets your mix right why not. i would love to get my hands on a pair of cdjs but if only my mommy and daddy is rich hell yeah id love a pair pioneer cdj1000mk3 and djm800 but in reality all i can afford right now is a controller im just wondering how you all feel regarding this?

eh…turntable djs said the same thing about cdjs 5 or so years ago. just do what you do…if you’re good, it’ll show, whatever you’re using.

Init !!! its all about track selection anyway. Ive got a controller and a sync button and i cant pull off mixes like the pros !! Tell 'em “DO ONE!!!”

I’ve been watching a couple of DJs close up now and what I’ve noticed is: They use their CDJ in a similar way I use Traktor Pro. That is: Fully automated. They tap in the tempo, cue the song, that’s it.

Actually, even my DJM500 has BPM detection included, of course it cannot sync my turntables automatically, but it’s helpful nevertheless.

For me, using the sync button in Traktor Pro is just the logical consequence:

a) use nothing
b) use a bpm detection
c) tap in the tempo
d) pre-determine the tempos of your songs and use sync.

In fact, getting the grids right in Traktor Pro can be a lot of work. So CDJ DJs to me seem more lazy in a way

ure right preparation of the tracks in beatgridding is lotsa work but this makes you know your tracks better. seriously for me i really enjoy using traktor pro and controllers personally its just very convenient.

it all comes down to what works for YOU.

just tell them that software is ultimately more professional and difficult because it is open ended, upgradeable, and leads the user to develope skills that can be utilized in other areas of music technologey.

can you tap in the tempo on a cdj ?

We still get the odd person saying using the computer is cheating etc. Just hand the phones over to them and let them try a couple of tracks, that will shut them up. Don’t worry guys, in two years that whole argument will be long forgotten. peace

I’m still an advocate of using TTs for DJing… but I understand the improvements of digital technology, and that’s why I have a completely hybrid setup. I hate people that are close minded on what new things are out there and how they can help the progression of the DJ art form all together.

You will always be hassled for doing something differently that has had a tradition already set forth. I was one of these people for a brief period until I took control of traktor for myself… Using all those wonderful files on my computer on my vinyl turntables, oh is it a wonderful thing… Don’t let them get you down!

I think the biggest hurdle for controllerisim is still ourselves. You said it yourself…

As long as most people see digital DJing as something you settle for instead of something you aspire to, you’re going to have to deal with those kinds of comments and attitudes.

Amen to that

I think theres alot of people out there who think “its most expensive it must be better” which i don’t think is the case at all.

I hear that a lot, which is weird. People buy a controller, some software and a cheap soundcard to hold them over until they can get CDJs and a mixer.

And it never made any sense to me. shrug

MBP Laptop £1300
VC1-100 - £350
Audio Kontrol 1 - £199
Traktor Pro £100 (Upgrade from LE)

Total = £1950 or in Dollars $3,210

Didn’t feel that cheap to me?

I hear people sneer about sync button and that it’s not mixing but to be honest, being able to sync beats isn’t the toughest bit about djing. It took me a couple of weeks to learn to beatmix on TT.

Rocking a crowd every time, being able to adapt to different situation, that’s djing. That can take a lot longer to learn…

I always get, “Why are you trying to emulate turntables, that’s dumb…NOW SHOW THAT GEAR IS GOOD BY COPYING SOME TURNTABLE TECHNIQUE!”
Someone even told me that 2 3ds and a 3m looked cumbersome, and I thought… huh?? when compared to all the size, weight, and wires that go with turntables?
Basically, they always say that midi gear can’t match up with turntables and then they go into comparing it.
I wanna scream, “look you a-hole I’m not the one comparing it, you are. I’m trying to find the strengths and merit of the gear on it’s own. I don’t have to see it in relation to other stuff, that’s you. Maybe you should reserve judgement til you’ve tried it. And not just once at a store, but really seen what it can do in it’s own way.”
But I don’t. I remain serene in the knowledge that they will someday have to recant.

zackly!

I’ve been DJ’ng for ten years, started out on vinyl (Still have thousansds of 12’s) then progressed onto rack mounted dual cd players, after a few years the CDJs started coming throught so went soley onto using CD, then I found out about serato and have used that for th elast 3 years or so. This year I discovered the capability’s of Traktor Scratch, bought myself a VCI and for the last month or so have been giggin soley using Traktor & My VCI.

Other DJs & even punters look at me like I’m alien as I’m doing something different, but screw what they think, I know that my performance is tighter more creative etc since moving over to using a controller & CHEAPER, selling my old kit worth around £1500 as no longer need it.

Its progression, i respect other DJ’s for sticking with CDJs or Vinyl or Serato etc, but they need to understand that a synch button isn’t cheating its opening new doors & possibilities with your performance, and its not as if I can’t use cds, vinyl etc.

If you can count to 4 you can mix moist genres of music associated with DJ’ng, so the real challenge is getting creative with the sounds your using.

I still get punters in clubs (every week) have a dig saying “what no vinyl”…yawn!

ive been a turntablist for many years, got my first pair of technics 1200’s back in 1988 ive had about 5 pairs since then  but last week i Sold my technics 1210’s and serato for (£700) then i bought a used but in perfect condition vci-100 for only (£160) i already had traktor pro !!! and i am as happy as pig’s in doo doo  now ive got to sell all my vinyls !!!

Only had the vci for a week and im lovin it !!!

i saved space, money and most importantly got freedom to be more creative while doing a set !!!

must admit tho i do miss the feel and even the look of a technics turntable

Oh, it wasn’t cheap for me either, not by any stretch of the imagination. But the attitude of some people around it makes no sense to me. But when you don’t take controllerism seriously you just have you $500 laptop, buy a cheap MIDIcontroller and use an internal sound card and a cracked piece of software.

Suddenly, with a decent soulseek library, you’re a DJ woooo

Mate of mine got made redundant and had to flog his gear. Once he’d sorted himself out, he got a VCI-100 and and audiofire 2 soundcard as a '‘stopgap’

He’s a total convert, and isn’t bothering replacing his CDJs/TTs etc anymore …
