Song Length in Mix

Song Length in Mix

Hi Guys,
I have just started to DJ, and i was just wondering how long do most people usually let a song play at a gig.

really depends on your crowd. i usually do about 2-3 minutes, basically you have to change the song before people get bored of it

Thanks, like i kinda of have the idea that it also varies for the different type of music too. I’ve noticed electro house i can let run longer, but for top 40 you kinda have to switch at 2ish minutes.

Depends on the genre. Top 40 is about every 2-3 minutes, same with Hip-Hop/Rap. You can generally run most house music for any where between 3-5 minutes. Generally in Trance you’ll play just about the whole song.

That’s all considering you aren’t mixing in and out with breakdowns and such.

Sometimes you can just throw in a loop and just add in and out of it (something to the style of the Martinez Brothers).

How long is a piece of string?

:thumbs up: lol… ^^^THAT^^^

If your name is John Digweed, minimum 5 minutes for the main track + 2 minutes each end for some beautiful harmonic mixing

going to go with the 2-3 minute peeps. but if you’r playing out and the crowd is really into the track, let it roll longer.

Traditional Progressive House is more like 10 to 15 minutes. :stuck_out_tongue:

yeah 2-3 sounds about right but also very dependent on track. If you have a track that breaks in the middle then repeats it’s first half, i’d cut it off, if something interesting happens on the other side of the break, i’d let it play.

also, depending on your genre, if you know there’s something crazy in the track that you don’t think the crowd can handle, better to get out than lose them, imo..
but yeah probably 2-3 for a ~5min track, as long as it gets the point across and keeps progressing your set!

let’s be honest alot of edm does the same thing/things over and over for 5/6 mins anyway…

I know your just trying to provoke things a little, i was a tiny bit offended haha :stuck_out_tongue: but on the other hand you are kinda right! Checked out your soundcloud, nice mix man!

But to get back on topic, i agree with a lot of you guys on letting the track and the crowd decide on how long a track should run. If the crowd is just chilling out i let the track run untill the point which will give me the most exiting switch, preferable while mixing it over harmonicly.

meh, i play breaks, dubstep and dnb mainly. i got no room to speak :stuck_out_tongue:

thanks, not quite my normal thing… normal fiddle with that stuff to chill

4-6 mins plus epic digweed style transitions, cos i’m so awesome

play the 20 minute version for the two mother fuckers that understand it

I play mainly tech-trance and sometimes electro/dubstep/harder styles depending on the gig/party/mood!! Sometimes i only use one loop out of a track or a few seconds depending on what im feeling.
I guess this thread doesnt apply to my style of music and I suppose if you were playing top 40 you’d probably play most of the track unless it was killing the dancefloor

I agree, as a progressive and minimal dj myself its about a minute and a half either side to mix in and out, and i usually play the whole song… that being said my favorite song to play out at the moment is omid 16b-rain, which is 12 minutes and the crowd usually fucking loves the fact it just goes on and on!

yes. Unbelievable jeff.

Usually I play most of the song in my sets, unless the set requires something different.
