Speakers (Bedroom DJ)

Speakers (Bedroom DJ)

I have just purchased my S4 and need to know whats a decent pair of speakers on the market at the moment. Budget is around the £100 - 200 mark. I generally mix deep house/disco and occasionly old skool hip hop.

My friend told me to get the cheapest krk’s but they are very expensive for just a bedroom DJ.

Depends what you plan to be doing and what sort of sound quality you need. With better quality speakers you’ll have better clarity, which is important for picking out frequencies in production etc (and of course if you’re an audiophile) but if all you want to do is bang out tunes fucking loud then you don’t necessarily have to spend too much.

That said, I’d find a shop and give the KRKs a listen… they make some seeeeeeriously happy noise

I use alesis m1 active 520’s…very happy with them. Add in a nice tight 8" sub and you’re set. They are about 150 quid on amazon.co.uk.

Yep I got a pair of those as well and they’re fine for the bedroom..

+1 on the Alesis. I dont have them but i hear good things about them.

I bought KRK 5’s and they are perfect for my room. A little on the expensive side, but sturdy and excellent sound quality.

Great stuff im going to look into the Alesis.

Thanks for the help peeps.

I just got my S4 2 weeks ago. I also got an Akai MPK49 and bought my 5yr old son a drum kit so i had to go a lil’ cheaper on my home speakers. I went with a pair of M-Audio AV40 studio monitors. I’m satisfied with them.

if you wanna go cheap the m-audio av40’s are decent too, even the bx5a I would give a shot, haven’t compared them to alesis but for the most part they have good reviews.

+1 on the KRK’s. I was lucky enough to randomly run into a nice pair of KRK 8’s (v1) at a yard sale for $75

I bought a pair of technical pros WITH the subwoofer (complete 2.1) for $189 on Ebay and while those are budget speakers my room isnt build like a studio so I wont get the expected performance/sound immersiveness of the KRK’s anyways. I talked to a friend who coproduce Reggaeton and he told me those Tech Pros were enough for me although for his studio (a secondary unit of Machete Music) he needed the KRK’s plus some Yamaha stuff. He made the comparison like buying a Ferrari to be driven on a dirt road.

Im pretty happy with my purchase but if you can afford them then get the KRK’s.

I have the m-audio av40s which I bought off Amazon. Great value and have RCA outputs in the back–I really like them. You really don’t need the power of the bx5a for the bedroom.

so if it was a choice of the m-audio av40s or the Alesis, what would you recommend.

I will eventualy get some decent monitors but for now just a cheap but value for money pair.

[ame=“Amazon.com”]Amazon.com: Numark NPM5 Active 5" Studio Monitors: Musical Instruments@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41zdOZebtqL.@@AMEPARAM@@41zdOZebtqL[/ame]

I got those in a pack with my Numark Omni Control. They’re total shit, loudish but horribly muddy.

I’m not a big specialist in monitors, but do not buy Numark or M-Audio. My experience with those wasn’t good. I’m pretty happy with my pair of KRK Rokit 6 (G2), but those are slightly more expensive than what you are looking for.

An important thing to consider, as fullenglishpint rightly pointed out, is what you need the monitors for…

  • If you plan on getting into production, it will be difficult to find something that sounds decent and is cheaper than KRK Rokit series at the same time.

  • If you just need a pair of speakers to be used as monitors while you mix, almost anything will work.

Yeah, with me I just want speakers for home use with the DDM4000 im getting. As for cue monitors I will be using my Shure SRH440 headphones

I’ve been wanting a set of these for a while

I’ve had those for some time. The built-in amplifier was making so much noise, I just couldn’t live with it. It was driving me insane. Still don’t understand how you can have those in a studio. If nothing is playing all you hear is this loud sharp buzzing as long as the speakers are on. I had to return mine and went for a pair of KRK Rokit 6 (G2) which also have some humming noise from the amplifier, but it’s very soft and completely bearable. If you don’t believe me, just do a search for “humming” or “noise” on M-Audio forums and you’ll see what I mean
