Speakers for listening/DJing?

Speakers for listening/DJing?

Originally had a pair of Rokit 6’s, but never got into producing. So I sold those, took a break from DJing, and then got a pair of the Mackie CR3’s. They’re fucking dreadful. I play vinyl and would like the music to sound nice when I’m DJing/just listening to records. Should I get better monitors or invest in some type of sound system?

Some useful info would be:

  • Budget
  • Do you want something you can use for parties / playing out?
  • What’s most important sound quality, volume or durability?
  • How big is the room?
  • Do you want to get into producing?
  • Budget - nothing more than $300
  • Do you want something you can use for parties / playing out? - no
  • What’s most important sound quality, volume or durability? - sound quality
  • How big is the room? - average bedroom size (not sure about measurements)
  • Do you want to get into producing? - no

From what you’ve said I would not go for a PA / sound system they’re more about volume and you won’t get much sound quality within your budget. Theres no need to go for studio monitors as these are about accuracy rather than sounding good.

My best advice is listen to as many options as possible and go for what sounds best to you.

Failing that Rokits are always an option, i’m happy with mine.

Get some nice sounding hi-fi speakers and an amp. You could do that easily for less than $300.

I had that setup for most of my DJing life. I have a lovely pair of vintage polk bookshelf speakers that sound great. You can buy a decent stereo reciever on craigslist super cheap. Bookshelves are a dime a dozen and easy to buy and sell until you find something you like.

You can also get a lepai amp and dayton bookshelf speakers for less than a hundo, shipped from parts express.

I would suggest to buy a small studio speaker. You have a lot to choose from around that price. Here is an excellent option.

The price in normally for one speaker not the pair when you buy studio monitors.

Then later you can ad a subwoffer. And you will be happy happy forever after

I have a pair of JBL LSR308s that I use for DJing and producing. They sound great for both. I also have an Alto 12inch loudspeaker nearby in case I just want volume.

Saw this today, seems to fit the bill: digitaldjtips review of Pioneer-dj-dm-40

I know you mentioned you had rokits, thats what I have (6’s) and I love DJing on them. Looks like you can get 5’s for $150 each which fits your budget.

Second the hifi route. No need for monitors if you’re DJing and want vinyl to sound nice.
