for me, as a SHM fan, I like the track, but it’s by far not their best. I mean, for people who like just top40 stuff it’s for sure a great tune, but for me, it’s way too simple, as you said. the only thing they wanted to do with DYWC was to excite the crowd and make them cry cause they break up. don’t get me wrong, SHM is pretty cool, but this is not their best.
sometimes simplicity is better then having to much crap jumbled together…simple song, simple lyrics that people can easily remember and sing along with…

100% correct, and mix into ‘we found love’ by Calvin Harris/Rihanna you have the main stream dancefloor creaming themselves. Titanium is exactly the same, you can slag off Guetta all you want, but admit to yourself that he knows how to connect with the hoi polloi.
You don’t need to like the tune to appreciate that it works. I didn’t play it when it first came out as I thought it was pretty rubbish. The dance floor disagrees; so what do I know.
All great underground producers and DJs have an innate knowledge of how and why good pop music works. Anyone who tries to claim credibility because they don’t have that knowledge, is getting it very wrong.
Im not a fan of the original, but the Joris Voorn remix is awesome.
I don’t particularly like the tune but I find this kind of music snobbery to be very distasteful.
To say that people who like a track are “simple” because, in your opinion the track is less complex or deserves less artistic merit than music you listen to, is really stupid, naive and the worst kind of music snobbery.

Heres the DEAL… As dj’s we dont love or hate a certian track or something. WE LOVE THE PEOPLE!!! and when i am in the booth I will play THAT track that gives people that look of total euphoria on their faces. I may not like the track… but for me when i can give people that escape from their everyday lives for a short time, that is priceless, and outweighs any “artistic integrity”. Hate me for it, but that’s just my 2cents

there are several tracks I don’t like but play purely for the reason 031999 mentioned. Some songs I only play if requested and otheres because I know what reaction it get from the dancefloor. I’d much rader play to an happy full dancefloor then just play music I like to an empty dancefloor.
Don’t get me wrong I do play music I like and for the most part the people on the floor like what I play.
As a DJ, I absolutely love or hate a certain track, and play them accordingly. That’s what differentiates my setlist from other people’s setlist, and that’s what DJ’s get paid for; their impeccable taste. It’s a good thing people like different things really, else we’d be playing exactly the same stuff.
It’s not a pure matter of personal taste though; some tunes won’t suit a night or a setlist or a venue, or reflect what your paymaster actually wants you to play (which should be close to what you want to play anyway, else what are you actually doing there?).

I get ready for diff gigs in diff ways, if its a gig were i kno i wont like the music im going to be playing im already prepared for it and just try and enjoy making other ppl happy.
if its a gig which is up my musical taste (the majority) then its game on and i like to play obscure songs that i have recieved from artists or lesser known traks…
the only thing that beats 031999 's love of seeing the crowds euphoria, is seeing them like that and then coming to ask you what it is your playing as they havent heard it before

Touche! Do you gig at places where the manager makes you play music you really hate then Karlos? I just reckon that a big part of the job of a ‘Selector’ is the selection, although yup, bills need to get paid.
@the above posters, some very good points are being made. I at least try to find some merit to any track… I mean hell even a track like “shots” has its time and place hahaha. I try not to think of a mainstream track being “bad” or “simple” or “stupid”. I just try to think of it as “fun” or a commonly used term “floorfiller”. The key really is to not overplay a popular track. Let it be a bonus or a surprise for the crowd when they least expect it.
oh btw, i love SHM and was raving with them from the beginning, i just think that their managers and marketers have skewed their musical vision a tad.
