Synths and Sequencers…

Hi all,

First post on the forum so hopefully it’s in the right section!

Been producing on Ableton for the last 6 month’s or so and after having a shot of other people hardware recently I found that it made making a track a lot more fun than usual and more creative in some ways as well.

Looking at eventually building a modular but to begin with I’m wanting something a little less complicated. Been looking at a few analogue bass synths and the one that sounds nicest out of what I’ve heard so far is the Doepfer Dark Energy (any other recommendations would be great).

Main thing I’m struggling to decide on is a sequencer (prefer them a lot more than using a keyboard). The Dark Time by Doepfer looks like a really nice bit of kit but I’m struggling to see a noticeable difference between that and the Arturia Beatstep which is a quarter of the price other than it being analogue and having a nicer finish.

Any advice on this would be a great help,

Thanks

Moog Minitaur? Not sure about its sequencer capabilities. Bass Station 2 from Novation is also a really good bass as well as lead synth. Lots of great functionality coming out of it for the price, has a really fun arp and a sequencer as well. Lots of people love the micro/mini brutes for bass/leads also - me, not so much. It was too rough sounding for me, but cool synth for the cash.

Truthfully, I haven’t jived with synth sequencers really at this point. They’re a bit o a pain to program and if I really want to sequence something, I’d rather just play the notes on a keyboard into a MIDI track in the DAW and sequence from the DAW.

For me, knob per function is a big deal with hardware, or at least close to knob per function, and obviously the sound it’s capable of.

Hi!

If you are into DIY stuff, check out the Shruthi 1 synth by Mutable Instruments. A little monster mono synth with a great analog filter. More features than you can get out of anything for its money. They also have some great modules.

I’m also running a DIY 4 track MIDI sequencer project, check it out details DigitalWarrior
