The Kontrol S1/S8 project [build log]

That’s awesome!

Say what now???

Seriously - you better start snapping these up for modding and selling. You won’t be able to make 'em fast enough once word gets out…

This. I already want a pair. :-p

Thanks for the positive words guys!

I might set up a page where you can put down a fully refundable deposit to “reserve a place in line”. I won’t be back in The Netherlands until April though so they won’t ship until the end of April. I just don’t want to make this too commercial. I would love cranking out a dozen of these things though and the volume would justify adding cooler things to the project.

A Kickstarter would work well for this kind of project. a 3 month timeline is about right for custom gear anyway, so you are already ahead of the curve.

I’m a bit afraid of NI coming after me if I start a Kickstarter, anyone know of any projects like this? Modding products from companies to create a product that looks and feels exactly like their brand?

I’ve got an S2 MK1 with your name all over it.

I can’t see the OEM coming after you. As long as you don’t add anything to it (NI/Traktor stickers, for example) you’re not doing anything that they could come after you for.

Made a 'lil mockup of the OLED display:

You should definitely check with NI first. They didn’t allow me to use their logo on my Traktor mapping service site so I went with arcade button instead of using Traktor logo.

Dope logo btw but yhea, suppose someone would start selling half-sized iPhones and started calling them iPhone 11,5’s that would probably not go too well. We’ll find out I guess, for now nothing wrong with sawing things in half that you own yourself!

Woah! That looks dope!

Front page, nice man!

Awesome, just awesome

damn cool project .. my compliment man :+1: .. and so nice sseing the post on DJTT front page (the reason i found too), so keep me posted on progress.

I started similar idea some time ago, but gave up as i tried to make a s1mk2 .. unfortunatly this one has a single pcb (not splitted as the mk1) … see here:

I needed the mk2 because TDJ (ios, which does not support mk1) wanted to keep all logic as it is, using as single deck unit for TDJ (no Arduino) .. cut away the mixer, soundcard and FX panel only (only keep the controls cue/play/enc etc working) as a portable device for TDJ (preparing/gridding songs). may not be possible anyhow.

So .. big compliment !! nice work

also compliment to the nice info on github: KontrolS1/README.md at master · willwillems/KontrolS1 · GitHub

Super cool!

Tnx!

Cool! Yes the S2’s unfortunately are not as easily modded, pretty happy they went for the panel design with the S4!

I tried S4mk2, not S2 .. but i got your point ..unfortunatly they moved to a single pcb :disappointed:, but your project is cool, love it, keep on going ! .. :+1:

What i did not get in total: do you plan to mount a complete Arduino/Teensy with own sketch (midi native) .. or how to connect at end ?

Oh damn, thanks for clearing that up! I had no idea I already had a look at an S2 and it seemed similar, well that’s a bummer, was planning on converting some MK2’s too. Thanks!

This is all kinds of awesome.

It’s the type of thing I would have tried years ago, but with EKS XP’s. They were fantastic for modding - cheap, lots of buttons, a soundcard and a jog wheel. There was little need to add a Arduino or anything like that, you just soldered cables on the pcb and added a case. Ahh, the good old days…

I am also not sure about, I think DJDoubleYou will add an Arduino too, and make the whole logic himself, right ?
