Thoughts on custom molded ear plugs…

I have been reading more and more about how important it is to protect your ears… I know Ean has gone into this a bit as well as with a few of his interviews. Im really worried now, and i know no money is worth loosing your hearing… but times are tough. Does anyone know of any cheaper alternatives besides turning your music down… obviously at gigs thats kind of hard to do

I found this online… would like to know how the quality is and if its even something i would need.

If moneys tight what’s wrong with the foam disposable ones? All he bar staff at the clubs wear them anyways. I have a few of them in my bag just in case.

Real custom molded are pure win. My gf has tinnitus she has a pair since three years back. The good thing with them is that they lower the volume of everything and cuts out all the frequencies that are dangerous for the ears. So the sound quality remains just the same as without them, which is a pretty good and important thing for djs.

Im thinking of getting a pair myself, here in Sweden they go for around 300 bucks.

So imo it can be a good thing to save up to.

if you are on a budget, and want something good that doesn’t block off all hearing like those foam plugs, then i suggest these…

I was just gonna suggest this, I googled flat response ear plugs and got this…

I have the Er20s. They take a while getting used to, but you definitely feel less tired at the end of the gig & feel alot saner the next morning.

The only down side is that sometimes I play too loud & don’t realize it. At some point I will get the custom jobbies as I expect them to be more comfortable. But for now these $10 ones are alot better then nothing at all. Protect your ears, what you lose is gone forever!

I guess in order to combat playing too loud you have to train yourself to set the volume with earplugs off, then don’t touch it for the rest of the time

thanks for the response guys… i think i will purchase those flat response ones for the time being… i appreciate it.

As is said above, if you have the money for them - definitelyyy worth it

Cool stuff. Thanks!

I don’t use them while I dj. I have in ear monitors… So I use them before I go on or if I am out in a club. They work gret for that.

I’ve had the er-20’s before. They are good, if a little uncomfortable to push into your ears at first! Once they are in though so long as you don’t keep pulling them in and out you can almost forget they are there.
The sound is much better than with the foam plugs but i still felt a little disconnected with them in… it’s a lot easier to understand what people are saying with them in though!

I’ve now got the custom ones, plus points are they are a LOT more comfortable, they sit just right and you hardly notice they are there; and they attenuate rather then block the sound coming in - you still lose some high end, but it’s rolled off smoothly rather than abruptly shut down.

The major (only?) downside to the custom ones is the sheer expense of them - thing is, they fit so snugly and work so transparently that it is easy to forget you are wearing them, and the next step after that would be for one to fall out and get lost - eek!

I’ve not tried it but you could probably get used to dj’ing with them in too, just imagine how loud you must be having to run you headphones (RIGHT next to your ear drum) in order to hear the next track over the club system…

I just ordered custom plugs yesterday at a local audiologist’s office. They came to $160 after tax. Pretty cheap considering what they do for you!

The doctor suggested 15db filters.

damn right! imagine you lose your hearing due to over exposure to banging sound systems, now - How much would you be willing to pay to get it back?

Seems cheap when you look at it that way…
Protect your hearing in the first place and you shouldn’t have to worry about it

Great way to put it.

If I couldn’t listen to music I’d probably fall into a deep depression and die. It is an essential component to my happiness.

Yanaki…you Greek?

haha no im not greek my name is Yan… and my old boss was greek and called me yanaki for years and it stuck and all my friends started calling me that… so thats kinda just stuck with me as a nick name…

on a side note i ordered a pair of the eR20s they should be at my house in 4 days ill will take pics and make some reviews about em… thanks guys for all the help this is def important…

Make sure your ears are clean before you take the pics! lol

yeah no doubt haha…

I got custom-molds for my IE7s last December, because the normal rubber-plug would seal off the ear.
Paid about 100 Euros for the whole thing and they are interchangeable with (at least) all the Sennheiser IE-Systems.
It’s a bit strange at first, but they are very good- I think we had a topic about this already?!?
Anyway; definitely worth the money- hearing is priceless.
And think about that removing your earplugs in a club to plug in IEs or anything like that will destroy basically all the good that comes from them. You have to keep your ears protected all the time.
