On Saturday Night, I was playing at a wedding and after 4 hours, my external USB harddrive (powered by an AC adapter) dropped out. After that, it reconnected right away.
Later that night, first was the midi usb controller that stopped working, then the audio card, both connected to a powered 2.0 hub.
What could it be? Been searching on the internet, but didn’t found too much info. Should I change my macbook? is a black 2.1 macbook.
But if its the hub, why would the HDD get disconnected?
I’m thinking on upgrading the internal HDD so I don’t need to use an external USB HDD and I can use 1 USB for the controller and 1 USB for the sound card…
Pull out the battery then hold the power button for 10 secs. Then put battery back in, plug in mains power lead and boot up mac. This resets the power distribution to the USB ports. This can help. I’d only use a firewire ext hd for music, then the two ports for sc and controller
The HDD could have dropped out because of shocks and vibrations. It’s a bit of a coincidence, but sometimes they really do happen and a faulty HUB seems like the most plausible explanation to me too.
Maybe, I’ll try changing my hub, any recommendations for good powered hub? About the coincidence, I think I’ll have to throw a party so I can test my harddrive in vibrating and shocking situations..
About reseting the NVRAM and PRAM PMU on the macbook, I’ll give it a try next time it happens, because saturday night I had to use my backup windows laptop..
Your audio card should be connected directly to your laptop, on to the port closest to you and the rest should be plugged into the hub to the port in the back. Also I would recommend if you’re still getting drop outs is to get a Firewire enclosure for your hard drive or upgrade your internal and store your music on there. I have been running my music internal with no issues. When I first started digital djing, I had too many issues with the external drive stop connecting in the middle of a gig.
