Using 2 Stereo Outputs as 4 Mono Outputs

Using 2 Stereo Outputs as 4 Mono Outputs

Hello Techtoolians
Say if my audio interface has 2 stereo out (2 reds 2 whites :stuck_out_tongue: ) and I want to route 4 channels of traktor into a 4 channel mixer, could I just set the outs as mono and use a cable that has one jack on one side and 2 on the other?

Anyone ever tried this out? Is there someone that has a setup like that?

Thanks for your time,

David (MadZler)

Never tried but I’d assume that you’d only hear one side of the track on both speakers if you do that. Mono plays both left and right together. You’re playing mono + removing left or right. So if your deck 1 only has a left (white) output in mono, it’ll just play that in all speakers. It’ll sound really bad in my opinion. It’s mono minus parts of the song.

time for a new soundcard matey :stuck_out_tongue:

haha yeah i guess… problem is i cant seem to find something with 4 channels that doesnt have so many extra features i dont need. I just need 4 stereo outs and headphone outs

This will work.

You’ll end with 4 Mono to Twin mono signals.

1R = 1R +1R
1L = 1L + 1L
2R = 2R + 2R
2L = 2L + 2L

But you’ll need to make sure that BOTH outs for each Traktor Deck are routed to EITHER R or L for each physical output.

You’ll need 4 of these:

Thats exactly what I meant… I just have no way to test it… Thanks for the reply :slight_smile:

Check my edit…

you mean the cables? check my original I said "cable that has one jack on one side and 2 on the other? "

You will only hear the Left channel from your music, since External Mixing Mode has no Mono option.

did not notice that… can anyone recommend a decent-quality 8 output interface?

ESI Gigaport is $200 brand new on Amazon, no frills whatsoever literally just has outputs.

An Open box Native Instruments Audio 8 can be had for $200 on Amazon (expensive new though)

Behringer FCA610 is around $200

If you have firewire, something like the M-Audio 410 runs around $140

Zomo-MC1000. 8 output soundcard. Comes with a free built in controller… :wink:

It’s going to be costly, but you can go with an RME UC or UCX. You’d get even more than 4 stereo outs Eventhough there are only 4 pairs of stereo outs. This is achieved with the Totalmix Fx software that comes with the interface.
