VBR Hatred
Am I the only one, or does anyone else absolutely hate VBR MP3s?
I usually like to have everything 320kbps CBR, but sometimes VBR tracks slip through, and they ALWAYS sound shite in comparison ![]()

Cool story bro.
Then your source is shitty. Most audiophiles can’t hear the difference between a FLAC and a v0.
On a decent PA you just might hear a slight difference, but when the room is packed with people, nobody will hear it.
Oh it probably wouldn’t matter for club use; can barely hear the lyrics in half the tracks you hear played in the city… it’s painfully noticable at home though. Midtones tend to sound muddy and the highs seem to be truncated at certain points, but it’s very random.
Have you done a double blind comparison? I only hear vbr as sounding worse if i can see that its vbr
our ears can play funny tricks on us sometimes.
i actually found vbr to be a bit more acceptable than some 192kbps mp3’s
i used to buy LEGIT mp3’s off dance-tunes.com (owned by id&t records i think) back then and all of the mp3’s were 192 kbps, that was like 5 years ago, looking back now and seeing i paid a lot of money for those 192 kbps mp3s just breaks my heart
Cue a 4 page thread about audio quality

Never use less then 320kbs when playing out imo. GIGO. In a club your audio is going through multiple mixers, compressors, crossovers, amplifiers, wires and then speakers. Each chain imparts it’s own sounds/problems that affect SQ. The better the sound quality out of your rig, the better it sounds to your crowd.
Correct, but there is no audible difference between 320CBR and v0 VBR. v0 just uses less space. It’s like comparing FLAC to Wav.
The only gripe is that CDJ1000mk3’s don’t play nice with VBR ![]()
A well encoded VBR file will be indistinguishable from the source material. Are you reencoding Youtube rips to 128k VBR or something?
This. Lame V0 is identical quality to 320 CBR. Same way FLAC is identical quality to .wav at smaller file size.
buy your tunes then this won’t be an issue.
Different online music stores use different encoding methods, and if you buy CDs you have to choose yourself.
Now that there is a ridiculous thing to say. I would much rather buy a CD and rip it myself. I have still bought the tune.
Well if that’s the case then you would just never rip your tunes in VBR? It’s actually a quite valid thing to say imo… 99% of DJs that I hear playing low-average quality tunes rip their shit off youtubem, it’s depressingly common.
This is true; a lot of people don’t realise that the 240p and 360p options in YouTube videos affect the audio bitrate as well as the video. makar1 has a point though, different music stores == different encoding methods, not to mention people who’ve uploaded their mashups and remixes to SoundCloud as VBR, in which case you’ve often got no option but to play them as there’s no alternative source.
This. If you’re hearing lower quality in VBRs try doing a null test; if there is a result, there’s something wrong with your VBR encoder or the source you encoded it from.
LOL we all fell for it. Troll thread confirmed.
Definitely not a troll thread lol, just can’t stand VBR ![]()
Yeah im so mad at this VBR mp3s, sometimes the files just disort and noises got put on in the middle of the song, sometimes it’s not even the same song as the title, damn this VBR format!
