Hi all, I’m quite new to these boards and I didn’t find much through the forum search on this. I think vocals (chopped up and arranged) are really effective on house tracks and I was wondering where people who think similarly get theirs from. Do you usually record your own, and if not is there a decent source online?
I’ve done some searches and found a few things but wondered if any more experienced heads had any good tips!
A cool way IMO is getting your hands on acapellas and chopping up phrases/small samples from them, you have websites like http://www.acapellas4u.co.uk/ that have a fantastic variety of songs from various genres. You need to sign up and become a member but doing so gets you 30 downloads to start you off and then your limited to 5 downloads a month. It’s not the only place for acapellas but certainly a good place to start. You could also look the various sample packs that are on the market were you can get hold of royalty free vocal samples/phrases. Normally these come with info on the vocals key/tempo unlike when sourcing vocal samples from acapellas were you will often have to warp the whole acapella prior to chopping them up which isn’t always the easiest thing to do. Having said that and hopefully this makes sense if you chop a phrase up into small enough piece ie indiviual words you can get away with not warping the sample and simply playing it in with phrasing you want. Hope that’s given you some ideas let me know if that helps.
I think there are some vocal samples in that list I recommended. Can’t remember if they’re any good or not. Even the paid samples are really crap IMO, so be willing to chop them up to your liking.
There’s a page on Musicradar claiming to have a load of free samples but the link doesn’t kick off a download. I also got the impression from various demos that any clip will need heavy chopping, but that’s the most fun bit anyway!!
Hate revisiting my own threads, but I’m seriously struggling here…
I’m really finding it hard to get hold of anything decent online in any shape or form. I like slicing things up and reordering them so would prefer things not to be ‘ready made’.
Do you guys tend to sample your own vocals from other tracks when you use them rather than buying, downloading and editing packs? If so I need to start looking into that because it’s not something I’ve tried. I’m guessing I’d need to figure out a way of inverting the lower frequencies and playing over the top to cancel them out and leave just the vocal range…
