Volume Peak Meters

Volume Peak Meters

Hey guys

Had a house party a week ago and a hell of a time.
the only thing that bothered me is the volume levels.
i thin u agree that traktors volume peak meters are way to small and
almost unusable.
then i had an idea to use the recorders peak meters for leveling.
its way better, it feels way better to use that than the peaks on the small
meters on the top.
just wanted to share that with you.
yes u dont see the FX on the deck B but thats the way it is.
maybe u can live with that.
i think its more important that the volume stays the same than to see the FX settings at the whole time.

enjoy

greetings
:sunglasses:

Yeah this is a great tip.

My friend has the Recorder meter on permanently .

I agree that the Master Meter is not informative enough at all especially if you keep Traktors Master volume low.

Ive been looking for an on screen Volume meter for ages. ive seen a PC one but not a Mac.

Richie Hawtin has one but i guess Minus made it for him.

Good thought…

personally I leave the autogain on, set master out down a few notches so the limiter doesn’t kick in, and route main out to ch 1 and monitor out to ch 2 on my mixer. I do all my mixing internally with my vci-100, but then run everything out through my dns-300 so I can keep an eye on my levels

Where did you see this onscreen volume meter for PC’s?

Also when mixing externally, should you just concentrate on the volume levels on your mixer rather than internally in the software?

Ooh ill have to check my web History on my Mac at my g/fs house for that later.

I might have got it wrong but there was like a page of different Meters, old VU style with the needle to LED style horizontal or vertical.

Will post up when i find the page.

i think i was searching Google on “on screen VU meter”

K

got one of the LEDs (the top left one) of my vci mapped to the overload of the recorder, so i always have an eye on the levels, no matter how far the master is going. helps to keep the level of you mix smooth…

building VU meters

Is there a possibility to build such meters with plugs on them
something like a box with leds in it with audio in and audio out kinda thing
that cant be so complicated to build but it would be worth gold
there are components that u can find on the internet.
maybe we should make such a project or something
there are guys that 4 sure know how to do this
maybe even a new DJTT product

how did you map that? please share

Heres the page. Now ive no idea if these are what we have been discussing but they look right ?

Have a lookie:

nice, thanks for the link

That looks really interesting!

Proper radio industry PPM meters are madly expensive. If these have got the same ballistics as the genuine PPM meters used in radio stations, then they’d be absolutely perfect.

…just need a Mac version of this now!

nicecast will put some meters in your menu bar (mac). i guess it’s a bit of a stretch for the non-broadcasting traktor user, but hey.

my only issue with using the recorder is the inability to monitor anything pre-fader, for level matching and the like.

word.

I’ve used most of these on screen meters before, in the very same attempt to be able to level my mixes properly without going through my DJM 600.
The onscreen VU meters usually don’t work with asio sound cards, and I can’t remember if they worked properly with multi channel sound cards either…

Ah well thats just brilliant aint it you party pooper moonie… hahaha

thanks for the heads up. You would think that a simple VU meter than mimics the one from the laptops system would be possible ?

im just guessing though. It maybe harder than splitting the atom for all i know.

Trust me on this one.. I spent a long while trawling the net

I did consider using something like this:-

http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/displayProduct.jsp?sku=DP29412&CMP=e-2072-00001000

but for me, its not so much about master volume that worries me, I want to ensure my incoming mix levels are spot on, so I’d need one per channel!

Yeah that would be a solution but i need something on screen.

As a side note i was at CPC yesterday (its about 2 miles from my house). I was buying a load of random stuff, cables and knobs and stuff.

I was at the counter (about 20 blokes behind me waiting and browsing the catalogues) and i felt this itch on my leg like a spider was on it. I was wearing baggy board shorts so i looked down but there was noting there so i just carried on.

When i got home i realised that the thing that was tickling my left leg was a whacking great big strip of Duck tape stuck on my right ankle.

I was in a club a few hours before sticking down a cable. The fucking tape had been stuck on my leg for hours and id been round Sainsburys before i got to CPC.

I must have looked a right tit..!

Just thought id share hahaha

The masta of duck tape!

All bow to him!

Its one thing downloading a VU meter, its another thing being able to use it. To use a VST version you will need a host enviroment to run it in, which means you will need to do audio routing with a program like Jackdmp, soundflower, or something similar to this.

If its an exe you could route the audio directly into the software without loading it into a host environment but you would still need to use audio routing software to achieve this.

And if your going to go though the effort of running audio routing software every time you wanna mix then you might as well be passing your audio though Ableton and using meters in Ableton.

For your master channel you want a peak meter(peak volume), but for your songs you will want an RMS meter(“perceived” volume).
