what are good affordable monotoring speakers
I’m new to the game,
What’s an affordable monotoring speaker that still does well enough to hear everything needed for production?
I saw the post about what kind of monotoring cans andn IEM’s people use so it sparked this question
You giving us a price range would be very helpful

but how bout under $300
I have a pair of Samson Resolv A5 active studio monitors. Their sound is crisp and clean, however bass does not come through very strongly which I think is somewhat typical of monitors. I like mine overall and I think they were $150 a pop so that would be your price range.
I did not master my own project but did mix it and was told by my studio engineer that I had a solid mix.
I’ve had a set of Alesis M1’s I bought used for $120 like 4 years ago .

I have a pair of KRK RP6 G2 (Rokits)
I can’t compare them to much but they sound good to me (bass is improvment over the 5.1 PC speakers I also have)
They are really loud!

I don’t have experience with them but people seemed to be excited about this deal so I looked them up and they seem pretty good.
epidemik’s suggestion is a good one. I’ve heard nothing but good things about those speakers and if you can get past the awful red colour of the ones that are on sale (who know, maybe you like ferarri red), it’s an amazing deal. I am primarily an online shopper for most anything I purchase. And I almost followed suit when I recently purchased my first set of studio monitors. Now, I could never say enough about reviewing your choices in person if at all possible.
I was looking at picking from the Alesis M1 Active 520, M-Audio BX5a Deluxe and Yamaha HS50M. After spending 30-45 minutes at Guitar Center listening to a wide variety of music on all of their monitors I ended up deciding on the Mackie MR5s. I was amazed at how much low end they were are able to produce out of such a small cabinet with similar specifications as the other monitors I’ve mentioned. I can’t imagine now having not gone to sample them in person before opening the wallet.
It’s funny how our minds work in terms of brands and marketing. I have not previously owned anything Mackie-related. I’ve made a conscience choice not to based on my perception of their value. But these monitors are pretty fantastic so far and have met my needs.
+1 For sure. I’ve been wanting to pick up a pair of monitors since I started DJ’ing (November 1st) and have been actively looking for monitors since then and trying to find a deal. This is by far the best deal I have ever seen on a good pair of monitors. I picked it up as soon as I saw it was available.
Do yourself a favor, don’t get anything from KRK. Almost all professional sound engineer’s will tell you KRK’s aren’t accurate. The Alesis M1 is probably the best you’re going to get at $300 as far as “monitors” go. But at that price, honestly, get a pair of Polk or JBL bookshelf speakers and a cheap craigslist amp. Anything under $400 a piece that’s marketed as “monitors” is just a marketing gimmick. In the lower price ranges, regular speakers are actually much better for the price.
People will argue by saying that monitors must be flat and that good sounding speakers are not flat. But that’s far from true. All good sounding speakers are flat. That’s what makes them sound good, and natural. At a price point of $300, you WILL get better sound quality will bookshelf speakers as opposed to cheap “monitors” from companies like Beringher, M-audio. (Not that I’m saying their products are bad, but as far as speakers go, stay away)
