What gear did you start with and what gear do you have now?
And was it hard to get there?
What gear did you start with and what gear do you have now?
And was it hard to get there?
i started with 2 technics 1200s and the mixer was a realistic by radio shack, and a pile of vinyls my friend donated to me to learn with. it was pretty hard to get there…
Started on a friends turntable setup. As for my own gear, I started with a basic midi DJ controller and as digital DJing evolved, so did my setup …
I started with the original version of this bad boy around 10 years ago…
now I own 2 studios and a record label among other things
I started with 2x 1210’s, a Gemini BPM250 mixer and 2 Jamo speakers. Im currently using everything in my sig.
I started with a with an X1 MK2 then got an F1 then got a Numark 4 Trak (yeah what a jump) then I got an Z1 then got a VCI-400 . I still have all of the gear and some other junk like a Maschine and a APC mini that I never use. I rotate playing between the NI gear and the VCI-400, haven’t played the 4 Trak in a while I miss it a lot. No it wasn’t that hard to accumulate all of that stuff. I forgot I also purchased a laptop to dj with I used to use my desktop for dj software, I also use both Serato & Traktor.
Keyboard. Now the list in my sig.
Started on these two CD-players in 2001 (the BCD-3000 was added much later!)
The CD players were used alongside this mixer and Gemini turntable
The BCD-3000 was added around 2010, first step into digital DJing.
Then moved onto CDJ-900s and a Denon x1600 mixer in 2011. Then swapped the CDJ-900s for the SC-2900s, and also managed to acquire my 1210s, my PDX2000mk2s and a host of other stuff along the way.
The problem I have is that aside from my CDJ-900s I still have every piece of DJ gear I ever purchased, so currently hoarding 4 CD players, 5 turntables, 6 mixers, 2 controllers, and a ton of mobile stuff (lights & sound). I keep saying I need to have a sort out ![]()
This is my most commonly used setup these days, with the 2900s normally on the stands:
And for mobile gigs (with two of us):
I started out with Stanton C304s and a M304 Mixer
Now i have a Mixtrack Pro
Have I gone backwards in life? lol
I started with a friend of mine as punk / independent “DJs”.
We brought a huge tower pc and his heavy old school monitor to gigs und ran two instances of winamp into one channel. ![]()
Then I got a laptop with winXP and controlling Traktor DJ Studio via keyboard.
And I started hating Windows.
After years of unpredictable blue screens, I switched over to MacOS Tiger (black Macbook) and my bought first controller. The BCD3000 with internal sound interface. This cheap controller introduced me to midi mapping, because of faulty buttons.
I upgraded to Reloop´s Digital Jockey 2 with audio interface. But these buttons were even worse.
So I looked a lot at ebay to finally find a VCI 100 with DJTT´s upgrade kit to FW 1.4! I additionally bought a cheap Audio2 (MK1).
And since then, I´m rocking this gear almost every day.
Started with a shitty LG Netbook, Virtual DJ and a Numark Mixtrack Pro I. Then I added a MacBook as the Netbook really just did not cut it. Then I needed more control and got an Akai LPD8. Then I started to be limited by the bugs of Virtual DJ and the awful mapping engine. Then I went big. I ordered an Allen & Heath XONE:K2, two NI X1 MKI’s, two MIDI Fighter Pro’s, a Focusrite 2i4, a pair of V-Moda LP2’s and a ton of Chroma Caps. This is still more or less the set-up I use. I rarely use the MIDI Fighter Pro’s anymore as I got better at mapping the X1’s and my K2 to do most of what I needed with shift keys and modifiers. I also added an RMX-1000 to the chain because, as much as I love the Traktor effects the RMX-1000 just sounds so good and is really, really fun.
So Short Version:
Started with a Netbook, Virtual DJ and a Numark Mixtrack Pro I.
Currently use a MacBook, Traktor, two NI X1’s, an A&H K2 and an RMX-1000.
I’m backwards.
Started with my keyboard, then S4, then 2 Stanton Str8-80’s into S4, then 2 Technics 1210 mkii’s into S4, then 2 Technics 1210 mkii’s into Pioneer DJM 900 NXS, now I’m just rusty as hell because I’d rather produce or just play.
I started scratching on old cassette tapes, I would stick pencils in them to wind them back so I could beat juggle.
I started with 2 gemini t02 turntables and a numark mixer. Then I got traktor, now i have 2 1210s mk2 with traktor z2.
hahaaaaa !!!
Started with a numark axis 8 and axis 4 and a crappy numark mixer, All used.
I had zero DJ experience and instead of looking up stuff online I just messed around with it. One day I went to update the firmware and something happened to them and they were F’ed up ever since.
By that time I had really got interested in trying top produce. I only had the money to either by production equipment or DJ equipment. seeing what one of my all time favorite producers Ill Gates was doing with Live, I found my change to get “both” gear. Purchased a copy of Live suite. Now my setup is a livid Ohm RGB slim and a midi fighter pro.
2 weeks ago I got a copy of Traktor and started messing with that. My goal is to be proficient in as many avenues as I can. I personally think Live is the future of “DJing” since its so much more flexible then TT, CDJs and even traktor or serato but I hate the negative connotation that goes along with it. So I decided to start learning how to Mix well on everything.
1xGemini pmx 60, 2 x soundlab belt drives, and 2 cheapo wharfedale cd decks, evolved from that. Now Denon DNS3500x2, DND4500, DNX500, DNX1500, DNMC6000mk2, Serato DJ and Traktor Pro2, Launchpad S x2, Launchcontrol XL, was difficult up until 10 years ago when I fell in with an agent.
It’s mainly because people who start and learn on tables and a mixer feel like it’s just really traditional.. It’s mostly just a mental block that won’t let them accept anything new(I was there at one point honestly)
It’s like telling a 60 year old man that old muscle cars are and have always been garbage, and that ACDC sucks lol. They’re just stuck on their ways and won’t accept any other way.
i dont think its that people that started with tts are stuck in their ways.. i think you will just always have elitist asspricks in every avenue of everything, asspricking their way into everything with their rules!
down with rules!
Think that covers it ![]()
