True enough. Also, Beatport uses them as [very] loose guidelines.
In the end, what does it matter if it fits in your set? I play techno, but I throw in all sorts. I played Junk Project - Composure sandwiched between SHDW/Obscure Shape and Radio Slave.
Agreed. Plus nowadays genres can be mixed up together for more creativity so yeah it loses a lot of advantages.
BUT, genres are here, they exist, so I wanted to know what genre the above music is? Because it really don’t sound Techno, but why then Beatport put it on Techno?
Interesting, how do you organize your tracks then?
Assigning tracks to certain genres is useful for organization, since there are certain elements that are typical for each genre. I would classify that track as tribal house.
I don’t know how Beatport or other places determine genres, or if they just allow the publisher to determine he genre. I’ve found plenty of examples of Beatport as well as other places classifying items what I’d consider improperly. I just use different folders in Traktor to classify things my own way.
Label decides, I believe. A lot of the time, it’s based on which genres are more ‘popular’.Hence why a lot of shitty EDM-electrohouse got added to the progressive house section… not only did electro house become a dirty word, there was so much churn that it was impossible to be seen, so labels stuck their music in the progressive house section.
Well yes I guess people dancing on your music don’t care about genres, as soon as you make them dance you won the party.
I’ve asked this question because yesterday I was reviewing all my music library to dispatch tracks in the right genres, to make sure it doesn’t make an infinite list of genres and sub-genres on my CDJs when I search for tracks in live sets.
Lol, I guess I’ve got my final answer here. I classified it as “Instrumental”, with all of my instrumental version of tracks. But Tribal House is what approches the most the feeling of the track I guess.
Absolutely true, I’ve seen so much tracks that are 100% Electro House stuck on Prog House.
Next time I’ll trust my ears more than Beatport.
I agree with goodbytes. The track was flat and really didn’t go anywhere. But I have no idea what hipster techno is. All genres suffer from a glutton of weak a$$ tracks.
Dixon, boiler room, etc.. total hipster rubbish. repetitive, boring, almost looks like acting.. hipsters love it, giving rave a bad name. Attending for the love of looking cool, not music.
