What is your deepest pain as a DJ?

What is your deepest pain as a DJ?

Greetings to all the DJs out there!

I am conducting a research about the challenges that DJs are facing in their careers.

Whether your are full time or part time, club DJ or mobile DJ… truly appreciate if your can share some of your pains (challenges)?

Also curious to know, what do you think is the biggest issue with today’s industry?

Not enough time or money for all the music.

Not getting paid (yet) to fully support my lifestyle and hobby by just solely DJing.

The biggest issue, in my opinion, the Pop-music takeover of dance music is giving it a bad name. Now that it is popular, the media takes hold and spouts out defamatory remarks, REALLY taking things out of context for drug related deaths, blaming promoters and party organizers when it is not their fault.

Also, big room house being the huge bullshit fest that it is. I do appreciate that it has made the underground semi-acceptable, but honestly, those people would have ‘found’ the true music either way. Big room house and festivals provide the general population with an entry-level serving of repetitive/overplayed crap, hopefully enticing them to dig deeper and find something they really enjoy instead of something they are force fed by the power players and SFX entertainment.

Theres a lot of moaning from other DJs and the negativity is tiresome although I do this full time and it pays all the bills sometimes that just really jars me, we all have difference of opinions etc but I wish people were a little more positive with each other.

Spending more time promoting than time writing music.

People unable to tell absolute shit from top quality. I don’t think it’s necessarily today’s industry though. People have listened to shit for ages.

Trying to find a regular night to play the tunes I really want to play out (progressive breaks). Bit of a mission and a half in Perth at the moment, so hence I dabble in electro breaks and techno to try and increase my chances of getting a gig.

That and the absolute deluge of shit that plagues Beatport et al.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

And I am the king of Mars

That ain’t good bro! Sorry to hear that.

that the reason your not getting paid you do it free why start paying for something they are used to get free.

my biggest pain is that there is no club left in my town so I have to travel to other towns every weekend, so for a 4 hour set I’m away from home 7-8 hours.

Throwing a circuit breaker to the sub amps at 1am and the breaker box is in the basement of the club.

It actually happened twice last night. Once on Headband and then again on Up Down (very demanding current hip-hop for those who don’t mix this stuff).

Seeing worse DJ’s getting better paid gigs.

I can play Drums, Guitar, Bass and Piano, yet people would rather see me push buttons that play other peoples music.

Frankly as far as DJing is concerned - I’m super happy. I’m able to play breaks (multiple styles/sub-genres) of such on a fairly regular basis.

What I’d like as a promoter though? More people at events. But I think that’s kind of a given

The opening DJ plays “animals” right before the change over.

You took that in the incorrect manner, I have had only paid gigs, I meant (yet) as in, getting paid enough and consistently enough to support my life without a regular 9-5.

I never DJ for free.

Never do something you’re excellent at for free.

Sorry, but besides he obvious bragging, that’s just silly. There is such things as charitable action, and besides if that was the case I’d be a paid gigalo.

Having to sift through 250 songs just to find the 10 tracks that is worth purchasing. The amount of rubbish released daily really muddies the water.

Really man.. Same exact wording and everything. This must be for a college class.
